Former Love Child star Harriet Dyer, 33, is the latest Australian actress to head to Hollywood. She takes the lead in new American crime series The InBetween (starts Wed., Jun. 12 at 8.30pm; Universal TV), playing Cassie Bedford, a bartender with psychic abilities who helps her father, Detective Tom Hackett (Paul Blackthorne), and his new partner, former FBI agent Damien Asante (Justin Cornwell), with cases that are a little out of the ordinary. Tell us about The InBetween.
It’s [US network] NBC’s new swing at a kind of police procedural with supernatural elements. It’s a formula that works and it’s a very updated kind of story – I think it’s going to go great because it’s got all the things people love, like a whodunnit, good characters and good chemistry.
How would you describe your character?
Cassie has these gifts whereby she sees spirits and energy. She sometimes falls into something we’ve called a ‘vision’, where she becomes a victim of [a specific] situation, then snaps out of it and some information has been given to her about how someone has passed away or where someone’s body is, or even a premonition. She has a pretty fast line to a detective who is her father figure, played by Paul Blackthorne, and she becomes a conduit to the police.
Sounds like a fun role …
Yeah, absolutely, and every episode is so different. Poor Cassie gets thrown into so many difficult situations. I read the script and go, “Oh, what is it this week? Am I getting caught in a fire? Drowning? Or trapped and gagged in the boot of an abandoned car?” [Laughs] There’s always a new destructive way in which I meet my demise, then I come back to Earth.
Have you noticed any difference working in the US?
Yes, self-deprecation is not really a thing here in America.
