A cross between Lord of the Flies and Wayward Pines, 10-part series The Society (streaming now on Netflix) has an intriguing premise – a group of high schoolers on a 10-day class trip returns home hours later to find all the town’s other inhabitants missing and every exit blocked. Where has everyone gone? Is this even their town or a replica? What happened to that terrible smell everyone was complaining about? Will this series succeed where others have failed and come up with satisfactory answers to its myriad questions?

When not preoccupied with its central mystery, The Society indulges in plenty of teen angst – unsurprising given it is the work of Party of Five creator Christopher Keyser.

Leading the cast is Pokémon Detective Pikachu star Kathryn Newton, who plays Allie, and Rachel Keller as her sister, Cassandra, who was the student body president. But school is now out for … well, who knows how long, and plenty of others are looking to take on a leadership role.

Other significant characters – and there are a lot of cast members – include:

  • Sean Berdy as Sam, a deaf student who uses sign language with some of the other characters but can also lip-read.
  • Toby Wallace as Campbell, Sam’s thuggish brother.
  • Jacques Colimon as Will, who used to travel to school in West Ham from a nearby town, and therefore has nowhere to live.
  • Grace Victoria Cox as Lexi, West Ham’s resident mean girl.

The Society is on Netflix now.
