She was one half of an epic Battle, which the judges claimed was the best of all time. But it still wasn’t enough to save Sally Skelton from elimination last year, losing out on a spot on The Voice 2017 to battle rival – and rumoured boyfriend – Bojesse Pigram, who chose to proceed without her.
It was a devastating blow. But rather than let it get her down, Sally chose to see it as a positive and now says she’s thankful she was sent packing last year – because it’s meant she’s been able to return again this year.
“Obviously everything happens for a reason. And I am a firm believer that everyone has their own path, if that makes sense,” she says. “I completely respect the fact [he didn’t chose to compete with me as a duo.] And what Bojesse is doing at the moment – he performed at the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony with a choir – that is awesome for him. So it’s incredible to see where we’ve both got to on our own.”
There were rumours at the time that the pair were dating, after reports surfaced that WA-based Bojesse was moving to Queensland, where Skelton lives on the Sunshine Coast.
But Skelton – now in a relationship – denies this. “We did a lot of stuff together last year…but we were just collaborating musically,” she says. “Having the opportunities to sing with people is amazing, but we are our own artists. So it’s worked out for the best for both of us.”
Skelton confirms her new relationship with WHO. “I am seeing someone at the moment, yes,” she says. “Someone I met last year through Ellis Hall, who I was on the show with – he was in my knockout round.”
While she won’t confirm her mystery man’s name – “he’s a very private person” – she says her new partner, who is not a singer, has been incredibly supportive during her Voice journey so far.
“He has – definitely,” she says. “I have got a really lovely support crew in terms of friends and family.
This year, Skelton is choosing to stray away from her acoustic style, challenging herself by performing the Selena Gomez song, ‘Wolves’ at her blind audition.
“It’s different to what I was used to, and what I did on the show last year,” she explains. “The big thing, for me, is trying something different. With vocals, I’ve tried to be more open. Last year a lot of the comments were, ‘I can’t understand a word she’s saying.’ So I was like, ‘I will focus on my diction, and pronunciation.’”
She’s also chosen Joe Jonas as her mentor this year.
“He is a clean slate for me,” she says. “I am not here out of spite for Kelly [Rowland] – I love Kelly. And I love Boy George… I am not here to put it in anyone’s face – I’m here for me. And everything Joe was saying really resonated well with me. And I was like, ‘You know what – this feels right.’”
