Sure, overseas travel is finally back. But, if Covid lockdowns and travel restrictions taught us anything, it’s that some of the best holiday destinations are in our very own backyard.

Just think about it, no international flights, no cash conversions, and no long travel times. Who wants to be stuck in the air for hours that could easily be spent soaking up the sun?

The Whitsundays has always been an amazing travel spot, for both Aussie and international travellers alike. Yet with so many hotels, islands and resorts, it can be hard to figure out exactly where to go.

We think Airlie Beach is the perfect place to be, whether you’re travelling solo, on a girls trip or bringing the whole family along – it’s the perfect place to start your Whitsundays holiday.

When to visit the Whitsundays

What’s great about The Whitsundays is that the tropical climate means hot summers, warm winters and bright spring and autumn days – so really you can go anytime!

The ocean temperatures remain around 25°C almost year-round.

How to get to the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays is located along Queensland’s central coast, approximately 1,120km north of Brisbane.

Although it sounds like a far way away, getting to The Whitsundays is a piece of cake, with a wide variety of options available.

You have the option of flying in – The Whitsundays has two airports with flights available from Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, Rockhampton and Sydney.

There’s the Whitsunday Coast Airport, Proserpine and Great Barrier Reef Airport, Hamilton Island. If you’re set on Airlie beach we recommend the Proserpine airport as it’s a quick 20-minute drive into town and there are coach services, such as Whitsunday Transit which will drop you off at the door of your accommodation!

The perks of an interstate holiday include a good old-fashioned road trip! The Bruce Highway links Queensland’s coastal cities and towns and runs right through Prosperine. Airlie beach is an extra 20-minute drive off the highway.

Either drive it yourself or jump on one of the many coaches that operate a regularly scheduled service into Airlie Beach.

The Spirit of Queensland links Prosperine to all the major destinations from Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

It’s no secret that we love Airlie Beach. It’s the perfect coastal town to settle into for your stay, with amazing restaurants, shops and entertainment.

With so many options on your doorstep, an airconditioned apartment is the perfect place to stay during your trip. Waterview Airlie Beach is located within walking distance of the main street and offers beautiful ocean views.

Whitehaven Beach

No matter where you are staying, this is the one bucket list item you need to get done! The world-famous Whitehaven beach is nature at its best, offering over 7km of pristine sand and crystal clear water.

With stunning walking trails and one of the best beaches in the world, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet are a perfect day trip.

There’s a range of day trips that take visitors to the beach, but we recommend an ocean rafting tour which also offers some chance of a lifetime snorkelling opportunities!

Airlie Beach Festival of Music

The Airlie Beach Festival of Music is the perfect time to visit Airlie Beach. Spend your days exploring the beautiful Whitsundays and listen to an awesome lineup of music in the evening.

Not only is it one of the most picturesque festival locations in the world, but the coinciding Passport to Airlie national talent search means the main street, bars and restaurants are full of incredible local Aussie acts.

Scenic Flights

Yes, walking on Whitehaven beach is incredible, but the view from above? Out of this world. If given the opportunity we would recommend taking a flight to see the stunning Whitsundays from above, Ocean Rafting offers amazing flights that give a completely new perspective on the region’s beauty.
