Known for his storytelling and genre-blurring musical voice, Snider passed away on November 14, 2025, after a mysterious illness saw him hospitalised.

“Where do we find the words for the one who always had the right words, who knew how to distil everything down to its essence with words and song while delivering the most devastating, hilarious, and impactful turn of phrases?” his record label said in a statement.

“Always creating rhyme and metre that immediately felt like an old friend or a favourite blanket. Someone who could almost always find the humour in this crazy ride on Planet Earth.”

“He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens.”

In the weeks prior to his death, Snider’s condition deteriorated following a series of troubling health- and trauma-related events.

His team announced on November 3 that he had cancelled the remainder of his “High, Lonesome and Then Some” tour after sustaining what was described as “severe injuries as the victim of a violent assault outside of his hotel in Salt Lake City.”

Shortly afterwards he was arrested in Utah for disorderly conduct and other charges following a disturbance at a hospital while being treated.

After returning home to Tennessee, Snider was hospitalised and diagnosed with walking pneumonia, having begun experiencing serious breathing difficulties.

His family described his situation as growing “more complicated” and he was transferred to a specialised facility for advanced care.

According to the AP News, his passing was due to complications from pneumonia.

Although the label statement did not publicly release a full medical examiner’s report, the sequence of events seem to indicate Snider’s health crisis escalated quickly. With touring’s physical demands, prior health concerns and the trauma of the assault, the chain of events appears to have left his system unable to recover.

Snider’s death marks the end of an era in the alt-country/Americana world. A former resident of Nashville’s East Nashville scene, he cut his teeth in the 1990s, mentored by icons like John Prine and Guy Clark.

His 2004 album East Nashville Skyline remains a landmark in the genre.
