Channel Seven has announced David Woiwod as the new co-host of Weekend Sunrise, stepping into the role alongside Monique Wright. The move comes as the network solidifies its hosting line-up ahead of the official ratings season starting February 9, 2025.
Woiwod, a seasoned journalist with a reputation for his engaging personality and sharp reporting, will replace Matt Doran, who stepped down after five years in the role.
David Woiwod isn’t new to the Sunrise family. He joined Channel Seven in 2016 and served as the program’s Melbourne reporter for four years. In 2020, he transitioned to the international stage as the network’s US correspondent in Los Angeles.
Over the past five years, he has covered major global events, including U.S. presidential elections, natural disasters, and conflicts in the Middle East. His efforts earned him a promotion to US Bureau Chief in April 2023.
Woiwod’s return to Weekend Sunrise marks a full-circle moment in his career. Reflecting on his appointment, he shared, “This is a thrilling full-circle moment for me. I’m beyond excited to return to the Sunrise family and tell the stories that matter most to Australians. Mon is one of the most talented and hilarious people to work with—I can’t wait to get started.”
Seven’s executives acted quickly to appoint Woiwod following Doran’s departure, ensuring viewers would have time to grow familiar with the new team before the ratings season begins. Sarah Stinson, Seven’s Director of Morning Television, praised Woiwod for his “depth of experience, strong work ethic, and authentic warmth,” describing him as the ideal candidate for the role.
Co-host Monique Wright also welcomed Woiwod warmly, noting his journalistic versatility and sense of humour as assets to the program.
Woiwod replaces Matt Doran, who announced his decision to step back from Weekend Sunrise to focus on his family and explore other opportunities. Doran’s heartfelt farewell reflected his deep appreciation for the role, describing it as “one of the best jobs on earth” and a “privileged position” for storytelling.
David Woiwod’s debut as Weekend Sunrise co-host is set for Saturday, December 14. With his years of experience and natural charisma, viewers can expect the same engaging and informative content they’ve come to love, paired with a fresh dynamic alongside Monique Wright.
