What makes Fleabag so good?
Maybe it was the dry humour, or the wonderfully weird and wacky characters, but there was just something about Fleabag that made it so, so good.
Ultimately, its popularity can be credited to the titular character, known to us as Fleabag, and her constant disregard for the fourth wall, giving us direct access to her thoughts and feelings as she navigates life and love in London.
Portrayed by the brilliantly talented Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who also wrote the series), Fleabag let us know exactly what she was thinking when she was thinking it – making us feel oddly connected to her.
We felt the second-hand embarrassment when she did something très cringe, we laughed at her snarky and slightly inappropriate one-liners, and we felt her ever-complicated grief over losing the people closest to her.
We felt Fleabag. We saw her, we understood her, and we related to her. And that’s what makes it so good. That and the hot priest (Andrew Scott), of course.

All jokes aside, it’s not just her relatability that makes Fleabag so special, but rather it was the way the show handled the very delicate and very complicated dynamic of sibling relationships. Specifically, sisters.
One of the few characters to actually have a name, Fleabag and her sister Claire (Sian Clifford) manage to perfectly encapsulate how beautiful yet utterly devasting sisterhood can be.
From mistaking a hug for an attack (due to lack of affection) to lying about the other’s haircut gone wrong (to make them feel better), Fleabag and Claire didn’t have the perfect relationship. But they did have a realistic one.
“It’s an accurate, beautiful depiction of the messiness of sisterhood,” Sian Clifford told the Los Angeles Times. And I couldn’t agree more.
As seen by the success of Succession, an authentic take on the deeply flawed yet wonderfully comforting take on siblings works every single time.
