Once considered a throwback beauty trend, coloured mascara is popping up on celebrities everywhere. From Dua Lipa’s turquoise lashes to Rihanna’s neon pink pop of colour, it’s time to brighten up your make-up bag.
To ensure we don’t travel back in time and recreate the make-up crimes of the ‘80s, we spoke with Colour and Image Consultant Aobha Carey about the best way to take a swipe at the trend. Although the colour expert says there will always be a place for black mascara, she explained that coloured mascara can compliment your natural features.
“Coloured mascaras can bring out the natural tones in a way that feels a bit more interesting and modern. Often, what actually stands out isn’t the colour itself, but the level of contrast it creates against your features.”
If you really want to enhance your eye colour, Aobha, founder of AC Style, explains it’s worth thinking about the colour wheel. “Shades that sit opposite your natural eye colour will always create the most contrast and make your eyes pop that bit more.”

For blue eyes…
For blue eyes, warmer tones tend to work best; think burgundy, plum, and brown. Those earthy colours can really brighten the blue in your eyes and make them look even more vibrant.
What to reach for: Burgundy and brown mascara for warmth
What to avoid: Black mascara that can dull the iris
For brown eyes…
According to colour expert Aobha, shades like turquoise or navy make brown eyes pop.
“Blue tones sit opposite warmer brown tones on the colour wheel, so the contrast can give the effect of a richer brown iris,” she said. “It’s a look we’ve seen on Dua Lipa, and it always stands out.”
What to reach for: Turquoise or navy mascara for contrast
What to avoid: Light brown mascara will wash out the eye colour
For green eyes…
It may come as a surprise but for green eyes, green mascara is the way to go. Enhancing the natural tones in the eye without looking too obvious, it’s the perfect option if you want something a little bit different but still wearable.
What to reach for: Deep green mascara to maximise the eyes
What to avoid: Bright blue mascara that takes away from the eyes
For hazel eyes…
Pink or purple mascara can sound quite intense at first, but the colours work really well with hazel eyes. The bright shades tend to subtly enhance the natural colour rather than overpower it.
You can go softer with a deep purple or bolder with a more vibrant pink depending on how much of a statement you want to make. And if it’s good enough for Riri, it’s good enough for us!

What to reach for: Pink and purple mascaras to make the eyes pop
What to avoid: Intense black mascara that can appear too harsh against the light eye colour
