Wardrobe spring cleaning 101

Your go-to guide to say hello to a fresh and revamped wardrobe this season

It’s a good time of the year to refresh your wardrobe so you can look forward to waking up every morning to something that is organised.

Wondering where to start? Set a date and schedule in a wardrobe clean out in your diary. You can dedicate a whole day or weekend.

Supplies

Make sure you’re stocked up on supplies like slim hangers, clear shoe boxes, dividers, jewellery trays and a few boxes to pack unwanted goods.

Ikea, Howards Storage World, Kmart, and Target all have great goodies to get you organised.

What’s next?

Empty everything out so you start from the beginning. It’s the only way to see everything you own and also work out what you really need.

Organise items into categories of what you want to keep, donate or sell.

The ‘keep’ pile should be items you wear on a regular basis, bearing in mind that certain items are seasonal. Be ruthless, and consider that if you didn’t wear it last season, chances are you won’t wear it now. If that’s the case, it might be a good option to sell the item if it’s in good condition or donate to a charity.

Within the keep pile, split the items into to more piles—summer and winter. This doesn’t mean that one or the other have to be put into storage, but it’s a good idea to keep current season pieces right at the front of your wardrobe along with a few year-round items (such as a trench coat, light knit, jeans, cotton tees and basic shirts).

If space isn’t on your side, then vacuum storage bags are perfect for a seasonal swap. Doing this will give you the opportunity to see what you are missing and will help you decide what pieces you need to invest in to complete your wardrobe.

Once your ‘keep’ pile is confirmed, organise items into their categories (skirts, pants, tops, jackets) as this will eliminate you having to go through your whole wardrobe every morning. T-shirts and knits are best to be stored folded to avoid them losing shape, so keep that in mind when organising.

Decorative boxes or open shelves are a good option if you don’t have draws. When it comes to shoes, it’s best to store them in clear boxes or on a shoe rack, but if you are someone that likes to hold onto all their original shoe boxes, yet struggle to see is what is in the box, taking polaroid photos of your shoes and sticking them at the front of the box will be life changing.

Handbags should be stuffed with bubble wrap to hold their shape and either stored in dust bags, hang-on-hooks or in draws.

Jewellery trays are great way to keep jewels organised as well as sunglasses and smaller accessories.

Now that you’ve made some extra room, you can begin to look at if you need any additional items to complete your wardrobe.

The best way to see what you are missing is to plan looks into potential outfits, this may even mean trying items on or taking photos, allowing you to notice what pieces you are missing. This will also help you to shop smarter when hitting the store.

Here’s a list of items you can re-invest in each season to keep your current wardrobe looking fresh:
