Why are we so obsessed with Rebel Wilson’s weight loss?

Once again, the standards for women's bodies are outrageously unattainable.

You don’t have to be a celebrity expert to recognise Rebel Wilson. Actress, comedian, TV presenter and one of a handful of Aussies who have made it big in Hollywood.

She’s starred in blockbuster hits including Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect, written her own sitcom and even has a law degree, yet these days people can’t seem to stop talking about her weight loss.

Rebel said that 2020 was her “Year of Health” and reached her goal weight of 75kg by sticking to a strict workout regime and following the Mayr Method diet plan – basically, you eat high alkaline whole foods very slowly and aim to chew each mouthful for 30 seconds.

“The goal was never to be skinny,” she said on an Instagram Live, explaining that her journey started when her doctor told her she’d have a better chance at freezing her eggs if she were healthier.

“It was never to fit into a certain dress size. I put in a goal weight in there because I needed some tangible thing.”

Whilst the results have undoubtedly made Rebel happier, healthier and more confident, which we love to see, it seems to be a bigger deal for us than her.

If you have a browse through Rebel’s Instagram account, you’ll find her posts littered with praise about her body.

Whether it’s a simple “you look great” or an epic message of congratulations, it’s as if her weight loss is the biggest achievement of her life.

There’s a reason why we can’t stop talking about it as the worst thing to be, in our society’s eyes, is the F word – fat.

You have to be slim, athletic and healthy but also manage to show some curves and eat cake and not take everything so seriously. Talk about double standards.

Even Rebel noted how she was treated differently when the kilos started to drop.

“Sometimes being bigger, people didn’t necessarily look twice at you. And now that I’m in a good shape, like, people offer to carry my groceries to the car and hold doors open for you,” she told The Morning Crew‘s Hughsey, Ed and Erin.

“I was like, ‘Is this what other people experienced all the time?’”

We saw Adele receive the same treatment.

Forget the fact that she’s won multiple Grammy Awards, an Oscar, has one of the best personalities in showbiz and also happens to be drop dead gorgeous. As soon as she shared that photo of herself in the black dress 45kg lighter, she was worshipped.

It just reinforces that unsaid mantra that those below a certain weight are the ones who should be deemed worthy.

It makes us average Joes who look at these pictures and comments on Instagram every day feel less and less worthy.

Taking control of one’s health and weight loss with the help of medical professionals is a great thing, but it’s not the only thing.

Whether subconsciously or not, we’ve all looked at those before and after photos and said “Wow” to ourselves when another celeb (usually a woman) reveals her weight loss, but it’s time to rethink.

Let’s face it, there’s juicier celebrity goss to discuss.
