SOMETIMES you just want to go and stay at an opulent, five-star-service hotel that makes you feel like the high roller you wish you were.

The Star Sydney, located harbourside in Pyrmont, is without a doubt one of the city’s most luxurious offerings.

I arrive with my husband late one Friday afternoon and hand over our keys to the concierge who swiftly takes our car and directs us to the front desk.

We’re staying in the newly refurbished Astral Tower and are greeted by a friendly staff member who commences and concludes the swiftest check in process I’ve ever experienced before we make our way to our suite on the 12th floor.

Our heavy timber door opens to a huge double space with a separate living room and bedroom. We spy touches of gold and navy and textures of velvet and marble whilst floor-to-ceiling windows provide us with uninterrupted views of the harbour and glimpses of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

There are two toilets in the room, one in the living room and one in the ensuite bathroom. The bathroom is completely marble with a freestanding bath, his and her sinks and a vanity with a plush seat. There’s a huge, oversized shower with a rain showerhead.

The toilet is a state-of-the-art Toto toilet that warms and cleans itself. The bed in the bedroom is a large king and one of two televisions is bracketed in front, perfect for in-bed movie viewing.

The coffee machine and stacked bar fridge are really nice touches, as are the welcome chocolates we devour. We go for pre-drinks at the new G&Tea bar downstairs, that serves high tea and tea during the day and gin concoctions at night. We try a tea-infused gin cocktail and melt into our velvet chairs.

We have a reservation for BLACK, so we decide to walk through the casino to the other side where all the restaurants are, overlooking the water. When we arrive, the sky is alight in shades of pink, a beautiful setting for a romantic meal.

We order a tuna sashimi and beef tartare for entrée and share the flat iron steak and toothfish glacier for main, accompanied by the staff recommendation of Shiraz.

The bread that arrives is warm and just out of the oven, tasting like the dream combination of croissant and loaf. The staff are prompt and attentive, sliding plate after plate in front of us. The hero is without a doubt the steak, cooked to perfection and incredibly moorish, without any sauce.

We stop by Gelato Messina, just walking distance from the restaurant inside The Star, and when we get back to our room, we’re excited about watching a movie in bed.

We both dose off for one of the best sleeps we’ve had in a while.

In the morning, we mosey down to breakfast at Sokyo where we have the choice of a buffet feast or A La Carte and then spend the morning splashing around in the pool.

The Star is currently under construction so there are works happening by the pool and in the foyer. But the hotel staff more than compensate with their wonderful service and existing amenities. This is the ultimate spot for a girls’ weekend, a romantic getaway or even a break with some pool-loving water babies.
