A daredevil’s extreme guide to New Zealand

Caution: Not for the faint hearted…

Renowned for its jagged mountains, rolling pastureland, raging rivers, scenic beaches and active volcanic zones, it’s no wonder New Zealand is also known as the adrenaline capital of the world.

If you crave excitement and adventure, the Kiwi’s kindly host an array of extreme sporting from volcano boarding to canyon-swinging. Caution: Not for the faint hearted…

Black water rafting

No, that’s not a typo. While you’ve probably heard of white water rafting, black water rafting is a whole other kettle of fish. Instead of rafting down a river, you’ll abseil, weave, climb, jump, and float through an underground galaxy of glow-worms.

Heli-biking

Combine all your greatest fears at once! Instead of hiking, a helicopter will take you to a remote mountaintop before you begin the exhilarating descent on your bike.

Canyon Swinging

Canyon swinging is a great alternative to bungee jumping. Launch yourself from a 100m high platform (if you dare), into a 200m swing with a 60m vertical free fall down a steep rocky cliff face. You get the same thrill/exhilaration/blinding fear as bungee jumping, without the nasty whiplash (literally)!

Heli-Glacier Hiking

Combining a helicopter flight over a glacier and a guided walk on the ice itself is an experience like no other. You’ll be so mesmerised by the scenery, you’ll (almost) forget about how cold it actually is. Strap on your boots and get amongst it…

Volcano Boarding

Take a scenic tour of the smouldering craters and awesome views of the countryside before you hit the ashfields and descend on your board. Racing down an active volcano at 80km is considered by many thrill-seekers as the coolest, most extreme sport around.

Sand Boarding

Throw yourself down a 100m sand dune while lying face-first on a boogie board. If you’re unfit/not keen on some uphill walking, this place might be a struggle, however, the breathtaking dunes are worth the effort.

Zorbing

Think of mice running around a wheel and you’ve got zorbing! So basically, a Zorb is a large, inflatable plastic ball, with another ball inside in which you roll down a hill—reaching speeds of up to 50km per hour.

Flyboarding

Have you ever wished you could fly like a superhero? Well, a Flyboard is a water jet connected to a jet-ski that enables you to ‘fly’ 10 metres above the sea. It’s already a hit with thrill-seeking celebs such as Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Vin Diesel.

White Water Sledging

Take on white rapids at eye level in your own flotation sled as you are propelled through the water with flippers on your feet. You’ll travel down the raging river with beautiful scenery as you negotiate your way through some awesome rapids, massive waterfalls and play holes.
