WHO Visits: Montage Los Cabos

This luxe desert-meets-ocean paradise is an idyllic Mexican getaway.

If you’ve heard that Mexico is a party destination for sophisticated schoolies, you’ve been fooled. And it’s likely because the lucky ones who’ve had the chance to experience the most southern tip of Baja’s wild, natural beauty want to keep it all to themselves.

After a quick two-and-a-half-hour flight from Los Angeles, we travel around 20 minutes pass cactus-dotted desert stretching as far as the eye can see.

A bold, bright sign tells us we’re now in Cabo San Lucas, a resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, and beyond the cliffs below we spot the ocean, a vivid turquoise.

As if out of nowhere, luxury properties appear dotted along the beach.

To the right, that same expansive desert landscape, to the left, property after property in what feels like a secret paradise in such a rugged stretch of land.

We’re en route to the new Montage Los Cabos, a five-star property set on 39 pristine beachfront acres. The resort has 122 expansive guestrooms, suites and casas designed to celebrate traditional Mexican indoor/outdoor living.

We’re greeted with a warm welcome from the smiling staff, who wave our car inside the hotel’s gates and hand us a welcome drink.

The reception area is expansive; the interiors channel the surrounding desert landscape with lots of sand, cream and native wood.

Our view is beyond our wildest expectations, even though we’ve been stalking this property on Instagram. An enormous pool snakes around the villas and out towards the resort’s very own private beach.

We’re arriving at dusk and the entire resort glows in warm, bronze light.

We’re lead to our room with our tired one-year-old son Xander, and pinch ourselves when we open the double doors to our Deluxe Ocean View King Suite.

Many hotels claim to be five stars, but there are few places we’ve ever been that are as luxurious as this property.

We enter an oversized living room with a couch that seats 10, you know, in case you meet some friends by the pool.

Our son’s cot is tucked away in a corner with a welcome basket beside it – holding a personalised pillow with his name sewn into it, swimmer nappies, pool toys and more.

Hidden behind an oversized sliding timber door is the main bedroom, also with ocean and pool views, and a big bed with a second large television.

Behind the bedroom, there’s a large wardrobe area – enough for two people to realistically unpack for a week’s stay – and then the ensuite bathroom, which is the bathroom of my dreams.

A large open wet area and bath take centre stage and past the tub are doors leading out to a small outdoor space with a rain shower.

At the ocean side of the property, there are daybeds and a large dining table and chairs and not far from us is a dedicated kids pool.

We put Xander to bed and collapse into our oversized bed after a day of travel.

In the morning, we wake to the Los Cabos sun rising over the beach.

It’s only 8am and pool-weather, as Mexico almost always is.

Jagged rocks on either side protect the private Montage Beach, creating a calm bay for swimming.

Surrounding the pool are cabanas and seats with umbrellas – similar to those found down on the sand on the beach. The hospitable staff rush to take our coffee order and offer us sunscreen.

Spotted around the pool are also more bottles of sunscreen and after-sun care to take back to our room.

We have a swim before breakfast at Mezcal, where we order off the a la carte menu, but also enjoy a fresh pastry brought to us in a tray to select from as we relax.

The rest of the day we spend playing in the pool and enjoying cocktails while Xander naps, before heading back to the room for an al fresco lunch.

This property is what holiday dreams are made of.
