he new Sofitel is Sydney’s latest luxury property located in Darling Harbour, a destination locals have avoided like the plague – until now. The seaside spot, while pretty, has been long overdue for some spritzing. The Harbourside Shopping Centre, a rabbit warren of souvenir stores has felt like it’s weeks or days away from destruction, for some time. Finally, the Sofitel has injected some glitz to rival destinations across the water.

We arrive at the hotel one wet Friday afternoon and baggage handlers take our luggage and direct us across the sprawling reception to the front desk. We smell the scent of what feels like a signature smell, not overwhelming, notably luxurious. We’re staying in an Executive room, located on twenty-eight and above so a friendly concierge, who has come from his desk to greet us waiting in line, directs us to head to the thirty fifth floor where the Club Millésime members lounge awaits for check in.

Our oversized room has jaw-dropping views across the harbour, visible from almost every point of the suite. The bath is hero here, taking up space in what feels like a sixth of the room, with views out over the harbour below and the city, lit now with twinkling lights.

We unpack our things even though we’re only staying a night because the robe is large and welcoming with plenty of space to spread out. There are even dumbbells if you fancy a quick workout – we don’t. The shower is big enough for two, though two shower heads would be appreciated in the space. A table and chairs, rare in city rooms, sits by the window for us to enjoy a glass of welcome wine and some chocolates, in our fluffy robes and slippers.

It’s dreary outside, but the rain falling down over the dark blue water outside is peaceful. We decide to explore the champagne bar downstairs, a spot a friend said we had to visit. It’s beautiful and modern, orange and timber. We feel spoilt as we sip away at our champagne and enjoy people watching – mostly suited types in pairs and threes after work.

The next morning we enjoy breakfast at the club before taking a look at the Le Rivage infinity pool and bar. It’s a crying shame the weather is terrible because the pool and bar are beautifully designed. I fantasise about a beautiful day sipping spritz watching the sun set over Sydney, and tell my husband we’ll be coming back.
