WHO VISITS: Trump International Hotel & Tower

A large-scale property with boutique hotel charm

I HAVE to confess that I usually avoid chain or large hotel groups because, sometimes, due to the enormity of the property, the service can feel less than personal.

As we pulled up at the Trump International Hotel & Tower located on 1 Central Park West looking over the iconic Central Park, we see butlers hurry out to welcome us and collect our luggage and realise our preconceived fears won’t be a reality here.

We’re swiftly guided inside out of the cold, handed bottles of water and invited to take a seat while we wait for check in. The foyer is smaller than you’d expect, intimate – the kind of foyer you’d expect at a private apartment complex in the city.

Friendly staff play with our son, who is tired and dreary from our flight over from Sydney, and before long, our bags disappear en route to our room and we follow soon after.

The suite is beautiful and larger than most New York apartments with a proper kitchen, living space, oversized bedroom and bathroom with a shower and bath.

We’re greeted with cheese and a surprise bottle of Champagne waiting for us on the dining table. Our son’s cot is inside our bedroom, but the living room is big enough to accommodate it so we wheel it out. Folded inside his cot is a Trump kids’ gift pack, a nice touch.

Our butler shows us around the room and we’re thrilled that there’s an easy one-touch button that controls the blackout curtains, hiding the city lights for bedtime.

We head out and upon our return, the turn down service has been completed. Fluffy slippers appear on either side of our bed ready for us to climb into.

The location of the hotel is exceptional – right across from the iconic park, a short stroll to Bergdorf Goodman’s, The Plaza and Fifth Avenue. One day, the concierge helps us find a deli nearby and on another occasion, helps us find a babysitter with only a few hours’ notice.

We don’t find time to work out, but there’s a huge stand-alone size gym downstairs and a lap pool. There’s also a spa and Medi Spa.

After our four nights, we depart feeling confident we’ve got a new recommendation to share.
