A week of tragic memories has turned into joy for Anthony Maslin and Marite Norris, the parents of children Mo, Evie and Otis Maslin who died when MH17 crashed in Ukraine on 17th July 2014.
On Tuesday, 10th May, the couple welcomed a healthy baby girl, Violet May Maslin.
Releasing a statement through DFAT today, the elated parents said, “Violet’s birth is a testament to our belief that love is stronger than hate.”
Whilst acknowledging the pain the death of their three oldest children has caused, Anthony and Marite said, “Violet brings some hope and joy for us. We hope she brings hope and joy for you too.”
In a serendipitous turn of events, oldest child Mo would have celebrated his 14th birthday last Saturday, and Evie would have been 12 next week. Otis’s 10th birthday is in June.
The pair see the new birth as an ‘amazing gift’ sent to them by their children and ‘Grandad Nick’, grandfather Nick Norris, a Western Australian businessman who was travelling with the children on the ill-fated flight, from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
“We will continue to love all four of our children equally”, the parents wrote.
In their statement, Anthony and Marite also included a quote from Martin Luther King, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
298 passengers and crew were on board Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 when it was shot by a missile near the border that divides Russia and Ukraine.
