The other contestants had better watch out – by the sound of it, these two friends, both of Peruvian heritage, are planning to critique. And critique HARD!
“We both love eating out and we are very critical of the food we eat,” says Andy, a food blogger who writes under the Instagram handle @eating.with.andy.
She admits her food inspiration is her grandmother, whose handwritten recipe book is her bible – and she’ll be aiming to follow in her relative’s harsh foodie footsteps.
“My grandma critiques worse than I critique,” Andy, 31, admits. “She’s very, very harsh and that adds a lot of pressure. I want to do her proud.”
Both Andy and Ruby, 39, plan to cook cuisine from their native Peru during the competition.
“We want to put Peru on the map,” says Andy, who moved to Australia in 2006, before meeting Ruby a year later after her friend moved to Brisbane.
“A lot of Aussies are still very unfamiliar with Peruvian cuisine so we want to be able to showcase our heritage and how amazing our food is,” she adds.
“Australian food is boring; a bit bland,” says Ruby, a Pilates and barre instructor. “Peruvian food is bold, citrus, spicy – chilli is in our DNA.”
While Andy is in a de facto relationship, Ruby is married, and has a four year-old daughter. It was her idea to apply for the show.
“I have been watching MKR for a long time,” the self-confessed super fan admits. “We wanted to apply because we notice that there have not been any Latin teams in the competition.”
While Andy can be feisty, she says her teammate is the one who will calm her down.
“I’m your typical fiery and feisty latina. Ruby is the total opposite. She is so chilled and un-Latina like,” she says. “She calms me down.”
“Andy and I work very good in the kitchen,” Ruby says. “We have our chores and work in them. I’m a very chill person. Andy can get stressed sometimes – but we make a great team.”
