US network Showtime has announced that it will not renew comedy series SMILF for a third season, with the show created by and starring Frankie Shaw to end at the conclusion of Season 2 in the coming weeks. Watch the trailer for Season 2, which is currently airing on Stan in Australia, below.
In a statement, SMILF‘s US network said, “After weighing a variety of factors, Showtime has decided that SMILF will not move forward for a third season. … We remain extremely proud of the two seasons of SMILF, and thank Frankie Shaw for her singular voice and unique creation, as well as the dozens of writers, producers, actors, directors and crew members both in Los Angeles and on location in Boston, who contributed to this exceptional series.”
Shaw also released a statement, saying, “I can’t express how much I’ve loved making this show, how much I love the cast and crew and appreciate Showtime as creative partners.”
The axing comes as Showtime and production company ABC Studios investigate claims made against Shaw in her capacity as showrunner. These include a complaint made by SMILF star Samara Weaving about the way Shaw handled two sex scenes Weaving filmed, with the latter alleging Shaw behaved inappropriately, pressuring her to undress despite having a no-nudity clause in her contract.

“Frankie Shaw’s overall deal with ABC Studios has been suspended without pay while we review our options,” a studio spokesperson said in a statement.
Shaw previously commented on the allegations, saying, “This is my first time doing this job and we moved fast, and I was learning on the go and I’m just really grateful that I can take these lessons of being a more aware and attuned showrunner moving forward.”
