The infamous Gatwick hotel first opened its doors in 1937 and now it’s the location for the new season of The Block. With strict requirements in place, this year’s 10 Blockheads will have their work cut out. But the $100,000 payoff is worth it.
We give you the lowdown on this year’s frontrunners…

Kerrie and Spence
Long-time renovators, Adelaide couple Kerrie, 48 and Spence, 46, are set to wow with their knowledge and experience. Spence, a tradie who specialises in prestige buildings has already completed a project for Grand Designs. ““I can’t wait to do something really amazing that stands out, he says. “We’ve got a game plan.” Kerrie, an extreme sports addict and registered nurse is definitely playing to win. “[Spence] is very good at making and maintaining friendships,” she says. “I am more fiery and more competitive … If anyone will get road rage, it’s me.”

Hayden and Sara
Hayden and Sara also have 20 years construction experience between them. Well, Hayden does! The 45-year-old construction project manager may come across as relaxed but this Sutherlandshire man is on a mission. “The whole experience is going to be pretty amazing,” he says. “Hopefully we can win some money and build our house.” Wife Sara, 31, an ex-flight attendant and stay-at-home mum is sure of it. As the one who wears the trousers, what she lacks in experience she makes up for with passion. “Hayden will want his input and it will be great,” she says, “but at the same time, don’t take my job away from me. Just say yes to everything.”

Bianca and Carla
After applying once before, netball mates Bianca and Carla are stoked to be renovating The Gatwick. Competitive by nature, Bianca, 35, whose dad is a builder, played netball for Australia before retiring after the last Commonwealth Games. Teaming up with fellow player Carla, 35, the dream duo have already completed a renovation together. “We did all the demo stuff and the builders did all the proper building stuff,” says Melbourne based Carla. “We had one Friday night where we were hauling a whole heap of rubble down Chapel Street in wheelbarrows while Revs (Revolver nightclub) was kicking off.”
