What is Selena Gomez’s documentary about?
The subject matter of Selena Gomez’s documentary evolved over time. Although all aspects of her life were filmed, not everything made it into the final cut.
“I was very aware that what I didn’t want was to do a social media look at the behind-the-scenes of Selena’s life. It had to go deeper,” Keshishian admitted, “It had to be somehow more authentic and raw.”
Estimating that the material filmed over the last six years could easily be made into a “10-hour docuseries,” Keshishian explained that the documentary was never just for fans of Selena Gomez, he was trying to “tell a story, hopefully, for people who don’t even know Selena or need to know her music.”

Eventually, the documentary morphed into an exploration into Gomez’s past - her childhood in Texas before she went on to star in Barney as a child actor.
The documentary also focuses on mental health, with Gomez herself sharing a vulnerable insight into her struggles during the first trailer, "I think my past and my mistakes is what drives me into depression," she admitted.
"As nervous as I am to put out something this personal, in my heart I know now is this time," she told Vanity Fair. "I hope that by sharing my experience and difficulties, it will help people feel inspired to share their own stories. And to have hope that things can and will get better."
