From the most trustworthy smudge-proof mascaras to the setting powders that will become your new best friend, here is a fool-proof guide on how to avoid the nuisance that is panda eyes. And before you think to yourself, “does any of this actually work?”, yes, yes it does; oily-eyed girl’s honour.

Top tips include: Don’t over-layer your mascara, use blotting papers throughout the day to pick up any of your skin’s excess oil and don’t forgo a lash primer. Every step counts!

Step One: Prime Your Lids

An often overlooked step when trying to prevent smudged mascara is priming your eyelids. Although this is not technically what they are made for, eyeshadow primers ensure that the skin on your lids stays matte and oil-free. You can layer it with eyeshadow or leave it as it is. It’s all down to personal preference.

Step Two: Lash Primer

Lash primer is another way to protect your eyes from the dreaded fate that is panda eyes. Although not many people use this product, it can be super helpful when trying to avoid the beauty disaster.

Coat your lashes in the primer, let it dry and then layer your mascara over the top. Not only will this keep your mascara in place, but it also volumizes and lengthens your own lashes; a win-win!

Step Three: Complementary Concealer

Odds are if you’re using mascara, you’re doing the rest of your make-up too; at the very least your concealer. One mistake people make when choosing their concealer is picking one that is overly hydrating, it may look good at the beginning, but we all know how that story ends!

Instead, look for concealers that set well and are non-greasy and long-lasting.

Step Four: Setting Powder

Even if you use a non-greasy concealer, the importance of setting powder remains the same; find one that is lightweight and translucent to lock in that smooth surface on your skin. It will not only help your concealer to stay in place, it will also help decrease the risk of your mascara smudging.

Step Five: Tubing Mascara

Arguably better than smudge-proof mascaras, tubing mascaras are the best option for those wanting to avoid the panda eye look. They work by forming tiny “tubes” around each lash and only comes off when met with warm water; much handier than the harsh make-up removers needed to remove the current smudge-free/waterproof mascaras on the market!

Step Six: Blotting Papers

If after doing all of these steps you still find your mascara is smudging, blotting papers are a must. Simply pat the skin around your eyes and eyelids to soak up any excess oil and bobs your uncle!
