Anne Hathaway is a striking Verity.
Having read the book and now tuning in for the much-anticipated film adaptation, I have to say, this tale is equal parts disturbing and compelling.
I couldn’t put the book down. And, disturbing scenes aside, one thing that really managed to hold my attention was Verity’s infamous red dress.
The very dress she wore the night she met Jeremy. The one she stole from Macy’s, and which was described as “ridiculously expensive”.
Well, the one they used in the film certainly lived up to that description. Anne was styled in Versace’s Viscose Liquid Jersey Draped Gown, and it retails for a cool $6,360.
The asymmetric evening dress is crafted from liquid jersey and features dramatic draped panels cascading from the side. Its sleek, sleeveless silhouette is finished with Versace’s signature Medusa ’95 hardware on one shoulder.
And while the dress is certainly a statement in its own right, the details are very important to Verity. Something that will become apparent in the film for those who haven’t read the book.
And because most of us can’t exactly drop $6,000 on a dress (or steal one, for that matter), I’ve found some similar silhouettes that capture the same feel as Verity’s — without the evil attached.

Verity’s red dress isn’t just a very expensive piece of clothing. It perfectly symbolises her seductive, carefully constructed persona.
It becomes associated with the version of Verity that Jeremy is drawn to: glamorous, confident and alluring — all the while hinting at the darker side of her character that we see later on.
And the fact that she stole the dress in an attempt to fit in with the wealthy crowd also reinforces an important part of Verity’s character: appearance, desire and deception are all intertwined.
