THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS
STARRING: Mackenzie Foy, Keira Knightley
The Christmas perennial gets a Disney makeover. In this eye-grabbing new version, Clara (Foy) discovers a fantastical land where toys have come to life and she is hailed as the princess come to save them from evil. There are many delightful baubles in this film – Foy, who just turned 18, shows promise as the dauntless heroine; the costumes and production are intricate marvels; and the closing credits dance sequence featuring groundbreaking ballerina Misty Copeland is not to be missed. The talents of Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren, however, are under-utilised, and Knightley’s saccharine Sugar Plum needs watering down. In all the attention to detail, the magic of the whole is lost. 2.5 stars
