The couple met when Damon was filming Stuck on You in Miami in April 2003; Luciana was bartending in Miami at the time and had a four-year-old daughter, Alexia, from her previous marriage to Arbello Barroso.

To avoid attention from fans, Damon had hid behind the bar where his wife-to-be was working.

”He started making drinks … It turned into a really fun night,” Luciana told Vogue Australia in 2018.

”We definitely had a connection right away. It was so easy to talk to each other – we were very comfortable.”

But Luciana also revealed that she turned down his first offer of a date because she needed to get home to Alexia.

”But I was like, ‘I can’t, I have a four-year-old daughter, I’m not going anywhere’ … and that was one of the things he loved, that I had a daughter,” she recalled.

“He said, ‘I love that you’re a mum and that’s your priority.’ Some guys might have been different, they might think it’s complicated, but for him it wasn’t.”

Two years after they struck up a relationship, Matt and Luciana became engaged, and married in a private civil ceremony on December 9, 2005.

How many children does Matt Damon have?

Damon formally adopted Alexia after his marriage to Luciana.

They’ve also added another three girls to their posse, making for a very busy household: Isabella, 18, Gia, 16, and Stella, 13.

“It was very different, it’s true,” he once told Parade of becoming an adoptive father before a biological one.

“I jumped into the deep end with (Luciana). I mean, Alexia was already four; I was an extra dad.

”But I can’t imagine my life having not gone down that road. I can’t imagine what my life would be now. I don’t want to imagine it.”

The couple’s daughter Isabella was born in June 2006, Gia followed in August 2008 and Stella was born in October 2010.

What has Matt Damon said about his wife?

”My wife is my soulmate, I can’t imagine being without her,” Damon gushed to The Guardian back in 2012.

He revealed that the family had a strict rule: Two weeks would be the longest they would allow themselves to be apart.

Damon has even turned down film projects that looked likely to impinge on his family time too much, or negotiated conditions that meant his family could be with him on location.

”I got offered a movie (Invictus) with Clint Eastwood,” he told The Guardian.

”It was always my dream to work with him, but it was seven weeks in South Africa in the middle of the school year.”

So he negotiated for Alexia’s entire class to come to South Africa for a 10-day trip where he could see his daughter, but her class could also learn about Nelson Mandela.

”So I left for Invictus and the family came a few days later with Alexia and all her classmates. They did a whole Mandela mini course,” he said.

”It was a worthwhile trip – and it meant that my family would only stay apart for a short amount of time. As long as the trip didn’t cost more than I was being paid for the movie, it was a good deal for me!”

What are Matt Damon’s tattoos of?

In 2019, Damon cemented his love for his kids by getting their names tattooed on his arm, right next to a ”Lucy” tattoo honouring his wife.

“On a whim, my wife said, ‘We’re going to get tattoos today,’ so I got a tattoo of her name,” Matt told Access Hollywood of his second lot of body art.

“And it always felt alone on my arm, and I’ve always wanted to put the kids on there.”

Although his children tend to stay out of the spotlight, they occasionally rock up to a red carpet premiere with their famous Dad – most recently in July 2024 for the premiere of his latest movie The Instigators.

”The way I feel about my family wasn’t something I expected,” Damon has said.

”I knew I was going to love being a father and a husband. People who were already parents would tell me: ‘It’s great, it’s wonderful!’

”But I don’t think you can really appreciate it until you experience it for yourself.

”It’s really quite something.”
