Think Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen make an unexpected couple? That’s the point of new political rom-com Long Shot. Watch the trailer below.
She’s the popular, intelligent and stylish US secretary of state with her eye on a higher profile position, he’s a risk-taking political reporter with a reputation for writing brilliant pieces that stick it to the man but who still dresses and acts like a sloppy teenager.
Although they couldn’t be more different, Charlotte Field (Theron) and Fred Flarsky (Rogen), who knew each other when they were at high school, find themselves drawn to each other, each offering something the other is missing in their life.
Running into each other decades after they used to hang out, the presidential candidate and the out-of-work writer initially get to know each other on a purely professional basis. But it’s when sparks start to fly that they defy expectations, especially from Charlotte’s snarky senior staffer (June Diane Raphael).
As rom-coms go, Long Shot is fairly unlikely, although it does feature an idiot TV star who has become president (Bob Odenkirk), so maybe it’s not that far-fetched. But thanks to some sharp writing, and surprisingly good chemistry between its leads, it gets away with its sillier moments. (Out now) 3.5 stars
