The film, which has been partially funded by the NSW government via the Made in NSW fund, was announced by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, alongside Chris, producer Doug Mitchell and director George Miller.

“Great news the Mad Max prequel – Furiosa starring Chris Hemsworth – is being filmed right here in NSW,” Gladys said in a tweet about the news, posing with the Marvel star and movie leads.

Boasted as “the biggest ever film to be made in Australia,” Furiosa, which George says will be filmed all across NSW, including in Broken Hill, will support “more than 850 local jobs and [be] bringing in $350 million to the economy.”

Chris, who recently moved down to Sydney from Byron Bay with wife Elsa Pataky and three kids – India Rose, eight, and seven-year-old twins Sasha and Tristan – to be closer to work, added that it was an “incredible opportunity,” and “dream come true” to be able to film blockbuster flicks back on home soil.

Speaking at the event, per the Daily Telegraph, director George said that “Australian film crews are some of the most talented and hardworking and dedicated you’ll ever find anywhere.”

Back in July last year, Charlize Theron, who played the titular Mad Max heroine Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, revealed that she wasn’t returning for the prequel and that it was dfficult to learn that she won’t be reprising her role.

“It’s a tough one to swallow,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making Fury Road with him.”

“He’s a master, and I wish him nothing but the best,” she continued before noting that, “yeah, it’s a little hearbreaking, for sure.”

“I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly.”
