The film chronicles the life of legendary boxer Christy Martin, tracing her ascent from a small West Virginia mining town to being the greatest female boxer of the 1990s.

Directed by Australian filmmaker, David Michôd, Christy is the story of a real-life champion, but amid the successes, it also tells the story of a harrowing, fraught relationship that nearly derailed everything.

Sydney, who also serves as a producer, immersed herself in training and dialogue with Christy to portray the fighter’s strength and trauma on-screen. She was also committed to working closely with Christy to tell her story, as the latter was emphatic: “Please don’t Hollywoodise my life.”

But as we so often do with sports biopics, there will be an element of trying to discern fact from fiction.

When will Christy be released in Australia?

In Australia, we’re looking at a January 8, 2026 release date for Christy.

The true story of Christy: From West Virginia to the boxing ring

Christy Martin’s journey began in Mullens, West Virginia, where she was born Christy Renea Salters in 1968.

Initially a basketball-player in college, she entered her first female boxing contest on a whim in the 1980s. As per Sports Illustrated, Christy only entered after being “goaded by teammates and friends to enter a local Toughwoman contest in 1987, during her freshman year”. But in doing so, she discovered an unexpected talent.

By 1989 she had turned professional, and in the 1990s her career exploded. Martin became one of the first women to be signed by heavyweight promoter Don King in 1993. Don signed her to a four-year promotional contract and after some initial hesitancy, began booking Christy for all his important shows.

In 1996, Christy defeated Deirdre Gogarty in a landmark bout that helped blaze a trail for female boxing.

She became hugely successful, earning $4.5 million before retiring in 2012. Her record at retirement was 49 wins (31 by knockout).

In 2020, she earned induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Behind the success was a troubling partnership

The real story of Christy Martin isn’t merely about jabs and titles. It’s about a relationship that blurred the lines between coach, husband, and abuser.

In the early 1990s, Martin began working with her trainer-turned-manager, Jim Martin (also known as James V. Martin). In the beginning, Jim wasn’t convinced women should be fighting so turned down Christy’s offer to train her.

He eventually relented and agreed to become her trainer after seeing her impressive work ethic.

Not long after becoming Christy’s trainer, they also entered into a romantic relationship. Two years after they met, they married in Florida.

He was roughly 25 years her senior at the time, and the power dynamics in the ring soon echoed in their personal lives.

Initially, the arrangement seemed professional: Martin would train, Jim would manage. And in fact, according to CBS News, some reports claimed that their marriage was “a business deal—not a love story—because [Christy] identifies as gay”.

CBS News reports that Christy initially tried to hide her sexuality and when her parents found out, “they couldn’t accept it.

Behind closed doors, Christy has said Jim weaponised her sexuality against her. In an interview with 48 Hours she said he “used it to control me, threatening to expose my secrets if I left him.”

According to accounts, Jim insisted on making career decisions for Christy, pushed her into fights she questioned, controlled finances—and ultimately, refused to accept her truth.

The tension escalated dramatically when Christy tried to assert her independence. In her memoir and interviews, she says that after decades of abuse, she told Jim she wanted a divorce and also that she had reconnected with a former girlfriend.

The attack that changed everything for Christy Martin

On November 23, 2010, the violence reached its horrifying peak. Jim Martin stabbed and shot Christy inside their Florida home, leaving her severely wounded and fighting for her life.

According to court and police reports, Jim disconnected their phones, removed the battery from her cellphone, stabbed her several times and shot her in the chest with her own gun.

She later recounted how she knew he was going to kill her. “I absolutely knew that he was going to kill me,” she told People

Christy then dragged herself to the road, flagged down a passing driver and was rushed to hospital.

Jim was arrested days later, tried and found guilty in 2012 of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison and died in custody in 2024.

The real Christy worked closely on the movie

Director and co-writer David Michôd has spoken about how having Christy a part of the filmmaking process was key to the movie’s success. She was on-set for a third of the shoot, along with her emotional support dog, Champ.

“I had never made a movie like this before where I was making a biopic, essentially, about a real person who was there and available for consultation,” David told TIME, emphasising that they wanted to “try and stick as close to historical accuracy as we could.”

David’s co-writer, Mirrah Foulkes added that having Christy involved was crucial. “It was really important to us that she trusted us and that she felt involved and engaged,” she explained.

However, Mirrah also revealed that Christy was initially unsure about having the film made at all. “She had this idea that we were going to Hollywood-ise her life and she was sort of steeling herself for that,” Mirrah explained.

Are there any elements of Christy that are false?

There were some events in Christy’s life that were dramatised for narrative effect.

According to TIME, “They turned two past girlfriends that Martin had into a composite character (Jess Gabor), a lover from Christy’s youth who reenters her life just before Jim’s attempt to murder her, which serves as a trigger for Jim.”

Where is Christy Martin now?

Christy is now happily married to fellow boxer, Lisa Holewyn. The couple actually fought each other in 2001.

“She boxed circles around me,” Holewyne told ESPN.

When talking to AARP about what she hopes people take from Christy, she said she hopes it inspires others. “I wanted it to be an underdog story, reaching domestic violence survivors and reaching parents whose children are coming to them saying they’re gay,” she said, “or, for some reason, they’re not exactly fitting into what the family thinks they should be.”

Is there a trailer for Christy?
