Cody Simpson made headlines when he started dating Miley Cyrus shortly after she split from another famous Aussie, Liam Hemsworth. Now, the singer-turned-professional-swimmer has shared some more insights into their 10-month relationship.
When quizzed by Karl Stefanovic on 60 Minutes, Cody, 24, revealed how he and Miley, 28, became an item.
“I’d known her for a long time at that point. She kind of acted as like, not like a mentor, but she was always a very hyper-creative person,” he explained.
“We went from being good friends and having a lot of the same friends, to being together for a while.
“Everything ended fairly amicably, and it was just one of those phases, I guess. You go through it and you learn a lot from it.”
Cody and Miley go way back – in fact in 2012 the Aussie golden boy revealed that Miley had always been his “childhood celebrity crush”.
“I knew all the words to her songs, I’m not gonna lie—I’m not ashamed about it at all. I was a big Miley Cyrus fan and I think she will forever be the most dateable Disney star,” he told Fuse.
Years later in October 2019, the couple embarked on a highly-publicised romance.
“Being with Miley is a wonderful thing in my life. She is creative and inspiring, fiercely independent and encourages me to be my own person, too. We are both creative individuals who support one another with our work,” Cody told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“Miley also inspires my art. There’s some romance in the poems I have written and yeah, they might be about her. It’s inevitable that what happens in my private life comes out in my work.”
However in August 2020 after 10 months of dating and spending a large portion of lockdown together, the couple split.
“Right now, two halves can’t make a whole and we’re individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be, like everybody else at this age,” Miley told her followers at the time.
“We’re just deciding who we wanna be with our lives, what we wanna do with our lives. And so, don’t make it some drama story if next week we’re out hanging out, getting pizza. We’ve been friends for 10 years and we’re going to continue to be friends, and so just don’t make it something that it is not.”
Miley recently made a rare confession about her most high-profile relationship, ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
On the fourth anniversary of her song Malibu that was written about her then-fiancé, the singer described it as “a song about a place and person that at the time I loved very much”.
“That love was reciprocated beyond what I could describe here with freedom & escapism,” she added.
Fans instantly commented that Miley may still be in love with Liam, who is currently dating model Gabriella Brooks.
“She’s still throwing so many hints that she clearly is still in love with her soul mate. Here’s to hoping,” one fan mused.
“I feel like she misses Liam,” another noted.
