Timothée Chalamet has taken full advantage of the Oscars-hype as he just announced the Dune 3 trailer. We were already gifted some ‘first-look’ images that have hinted at some very intense character development as the third film is set to take place years after the sequel.
Dune 3, officially titled Dune: Part Three, has been publicised as “the final conclusion” to director Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy.
While there are six Dune books by Frank Herbert that were adapted into the most recent films, Villeneuve told Time Magazine in an interview ahead of Dune: Part Two that he will only be making three films and that the book, Dune Messiah, will be his last adaptation.
Finally, we can forget the ballet and opera mess, and turn our attention to spices and sandworms.
Here’s everything we know about the release of Dune 3.
When does Dune 3 premiere?
Dune: Part Three will be released in cinemas on December 18, 2026, marking the third and final film from director Denis Villeneuve for the Dune trilogy.
Who is in the cast of Dune 3?
The cast of Dune: Part Three will see leads Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya returning as Paul Atreides and Chani, respectively.
In the released images, Robert Pattinson can also be seen appearing the first time in the franchise as new villain Scytale, as well as Jason Momoa as Hayt, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Florence Pugh as Irulan, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides and Isaach De Bankolé as Farok.
What is the plot of Dune 3?
While the first two Dune films, Dune and Dune: Part Two were a pair of films made to adapt the first book in Frank Herbert’s Dune series, Dune: Part Three was written as another story entirely.
In an interview with Vanity Fair prior to the release of Dune: Part Two, director Denis Villeneuve noted that if he did “a third one, which is in the writing process”, it won’t be “like a trilogy.”
“It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity,” the director admitted.
Villeneuve’s films have all centred around Timothée Chalamet’s character, Paul Atreides.
In Dune: Part Three, the story will be based off Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, which follows Paul 12 years after Dune: Part Two, struggling to manage a galactic jihad (a violent, 12-year holy war) fought in his name to cement his rule as emperor.
While the plot of Dune can be quite difficult to understand (I mean, there are six books and a whole intergalactic world that has been created, so fair enough), what we know of Villeneuve’s upcoming December film is that it will be much darker than the previous two.
From conspiracies to overthrow Paul led by the Bene Gesserit (an ancient, secretive, all-female sisterhood or band of witches with immense political and social power) to Paul’s children with Chani (played by Zendaya), Dune loyalists will certainly not be disappointed…but may need to study up on their lore.
