The offbeat entertainer talks about her shaky vocals, being ‘weird’ and the dark horse who might win Richie in the end.
So … were you just too weird for Richie?
[Laughs] I think I’m just open and honest about who I am! And I embrace everything that I am, and I’m happy to share it with people. Because I know that people will be a fan, or they won’t. What I want, in terms of love, is someone to understand every side of me. I think he probably had a stronger connection with the other girls.
What did you mean when you said you were weird, anyway?
I just mean wacky, able to express myself through song and dance … basically weird as in out of the ordinary. I’m able to be who I am with no shame. So when I said that, I was just owning it.
Have you been told you’re weird your whole life?
No, I see the word ‘weird’ as a positive. It means unique. People magnetise towards those who are unique. At the end of the day, everyone wants to be inspired and smile and laugh. Especially since life is so serious as it is.
What was your dating life like before you went on the show?
My dating life was hard! I live in Sydney—it’s hard to find a guy that sweeps you off your feet here. I’m always looking for that wow factor, that person to take my breath away. Because I am a larger-than-life character. I’m never going to be the wallflower. I’m looking, basically, for a guy who’s strong enough to take that on. I was very much in love at an early age, in my 20s, and now I have been single for quite some time. I’m an independent woman, happy to be by myself and wait for that one person who is going to take my hand and sail off into the sunset.
What about Sydney makes it so hard for you to find someone?
Everyone’s quite busy in Sydney. It’s a busy city, and we’re constantly on the move. I suppose it’s—well, New York is bigger, but it’s all relative—it’s a lot like New York. It’s hard, at times, to find someone. I have such beautiful friends here in Sydney—and they have gorgeous men under their wing! Now I’m just looking for my penguin.
Some people have said that for an entertainer, you didn’t quite have the voice when you sang that song for Richie. What is your response to those criticisms?
Well, look, it was no Adele’s “Hello”! [laughs] But look, I was definitely nervous and I definitely understand the cringe factor. I was inspired, in the moment, and that’s why I sang. I actually wrote the song before the show and before I even knew it was Richie … and when I saw him I knew he would embrace it. And he did. [Laughs] I was competing against 21 other women. I had to make my mark, and I wasn’t afraid to make it.
What did you think of when you saw it for the first time on TV?
I thought: that wasn’t as bad as I thought it was! But according to some people, it was a total no-no. Sometimes, you know, we watch the show for that cringe factor. Falling in love is awkward, and it’s fantastic, and it’s to be celebrated and serenaded. And that’s what I did.
You also read a poem at one of the cocktail parties, though that never made it to air.
I read a poem titled The Heart. And it was written by my brother, Mark St John. It’s in his book The Getting of Wisdom. I actualy read it to the other girls, because we were all putting our hearts on the line. It’s a very important poem for my family—Mark wrote it when he was deeply in love. [The idea is that] the heart is a funny thing … it wants what it wants!
Was it generally a tense atmosphere in the house—and did it grow more tense after you had a go at Keira?
I like to avoid drama, and I like to make fun of situations, to make things light. Bring on the laughs! In terms of what happened with Keira, I immediately regretted saying it the moment it came out of my mouth. It’s more my style to take someone to the side and speak to them directly, and I felt awful taking that moment of happiness and turning it on her.
Why did you do it then?
Emotions run high in the house, and it just came out. It’s all water under the bridge now. It’s all good. And it was okay in the house the majority of the time—we are all pretty good friends.
Right now, it seems like the competition is between Alex, Nikki and Megan. What’s your take on who may go all the way and win Richie’s final rose?
Those three … and Faith. The beautiful Faith. She’s just so bubbly and energetic. And fun. And that’s what Richie is.
