Damn it Joffrey!

SPOILER ALERT: This article has MAJOR spoilers for Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon and Star Wars. Continue reading at your own risk.

We all know going into a prequel there are going to be some things spoiled for us by virtue of it being a prequel.

For example, you know Anakin Skywalker is going to become Darth Vader in Star Wars because the prequel is basically a Darth Vader origin story.

So going into HBO’s House of the Dragon, there were a few things we expected to be spoiled for us already.

Like the fact that the Taragreyns are eventually toppled from the throne or that dragons will mostly die out.

However, it being set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones you’d think the series was removed enough to not completely spoil the ending. We’re not watching Daenerys’ grandparents, we’re watching her great great grandparents (or something).

Unfortunately, nothing gets past fanatical nerds who noticed that there is a specific scene that spells out exactly what is going to happen to a main character in House of the Dragon

From here on out things are going to get super spoilery, this is your last chance to turn back!

Watch the following at your own risk.

In the scene, King Joffrey is explaining to Margaery Tyrell how Rheanyra Taragryen, arguably the main character of House of the Dragon and played by Australia’s own Milly Alcock, dies.

“Rhaenyra Targaryen, was murdered by her brother or rather, his dragon,” Joffrey says gleefully.

“It ate her while her son watched,” he continues, laughing.

Now this being Game of Thrones, maybe just maybe he’s referring to another Rheanyra Taragareyn. I mean, our Rheanyra doesn’t have a brother….yet.

To fans that have read Fire and Blood or The Princess and The Queen, the two works by George RR Martin that House of the Dragon is based on, none of this is a surprise.

But for the casual Game of Thrones watcher or those of us who only read a Song of Ice and Fire, this is a bit of a shock.

Many of us probably realised Rheanyra wasn’t going to end up on the throne. In Game of Thrones Daenrys being a female ruler was a big deal and you’d think a realm that had had a Queen before would be less dramatic about it. However, her death wasn’t so obvious.

So far House of the Dragon has been leading us to believe Rheanyra’ uncle Daemon will fight for his place as heir, but, this shows us that the real risk to Rheanyra’s position is a future brother.

Perhaps the final reveal in the most recent episode indicates what is on the horizon.

House of the Dragon has just been renewed for a second season so this could throw a spanner in the works for showrunners.

Last time a HBO fantasy series worked up to an ‘epic ending’ the result was extremely unsatisfactory. Let’s hope this time they can reach their potential.

At the end of the day what this scene really indicates is that, even in death, Joffrey is still a little dweeb and ruins everything.
