Following the end of The Mindy Project, her six-season TV comedy, Mindy Kaling has turned her attention to the big screen, writing the screenplay for upcoming film Late Night. Watch the trailer below.
The movie is about a late night TV host, played by Emma Thompson, who is increasingly out of touch with modern audiences and the new writer on her staff (Kaling’s character, Molly) who is the only non-white male. It’s a situation Kaling knows a thing or two about, having been the only person of colour on the writing staff of the American version of The Office.
“Obviously I’m making a comedy movie, so things are exaggerated for comic effect, but similar things have happened to me in my career,” Kaling told Variety. “It’s not so much that the people in the film that I portray are bigoted. They’ve just been sheltered by the status quo. And every one of these people in the movie change. They’re not evil. They evolve.”
Late Night is in Australian cinemas on July 25.
