Last night, Rachael Evren became the first real victim of Love Island Australia’s dumping system.
Sure, we lost Jordan Tilli a couple of days ago, but since he wasn’t in a cute and committed relationship, we probably cared a little less.
Rachael took up with fellow contestant Chris Graudins, who walked into the villa as a “bomb”. Their romance sparked over a mutual love for all things Harry Potter, and their connection only seemed to grow from there.
“We were each other’s safe place in [the Villa], so that was really nice,” Rachael reflected on a call with WHO this morning.
However, Chris did play a hand in Rachael’s brutal removal from the Villa, as it was his, Aaron and Taku’s job to choose if it was her or Lexy who would leave.
Chris also seemed to move on pretty quickly, with new “bomb” Zoe turning his head and then catching his attention with a Despicable Me impression.
The pair kissed seemingly very quickly after Rachael had left, leaving the 21-year-old content creator to wonder just how genuine her connection with Chris was.
Last night’s episode was brutal! How are you feeling in the wake of it all?
It was hard to watch, obviously, because I was very genuine and open in my feelings towards Chris … I’m a person who wears their heart on their sleeve, and yeah it felt like it was reciprocated, but to see that happen 12 hours later was very hard to watch.
You said you felt like you might wait and see what happens if Chris leaves the Villa single – do you still feel the same way?
It’s all under circumstances … what we watch isn’t always what exactly happens in the Villa, so I would want to know, I would want to hear his side of it, but it’s not something I’d be jumping right into again… what I always say is “everything happens for a reason”, and if the universe wants us to be together, it will happen, so I can’t force anything, we’ll see how we go, and see what happens from there.
You bonded over Harry Potter, but what didn’t we get to see of your relationship on the show?
We were literally like the same person, copy and paste, like we had the same favourite everything so, same favourite ice cream, animal, cocktails, we went to the same bars, we even went to the same school, like we actually had so much in common that we didn’t even know about. I kept saying this, and the whole Villa was on fire, there was drama happening everywhere and Chris and I were literally dancing in the backyard in the rain… I knew how incredible his personality was, so I wanted everyone else to see that.
How did you feel when he decided to stay?
I think it was big on my part to ask him to consider leaving, but I also understood if he wanted to stay. I like the fact that he even considered it though, it wasn’t a shutdown straight away, like he did consider, and at some point, he did want to leave. But obviously, he felt like he wanted to be there for a longer experience, and I completely understand that as well.
How did it feel to be up for elimination beside Lexy? Were you close friends?
Yeah, well this is the thing, I considered her a very good friend in there, we considered ourselves best friends in there, but she made a lot of comments about Chris and my relationship, then the next day was like “Chris, you need to stay here”. If it was the other way around, I’d fully be supporting Ryan going back with her because I know what she would have wanted, and I fully supported her and Ryan’s relationship, even when she had eyes for other people. So, to see that was also quite hurtful … but maybe she’s not in there for other people, maybe she really is in there for herself.
Do you think you’ll continue watching the show?
I think at this stage I might not watch full episodes, I’ll just keep up to date with who’s leaving and all that, but yeah, it’s just a bit hard at this stage trying to cope with it all, because it’s still so fresh, and I did cry on national television, so I have to kind of get over that too. [laughs]
And finally, who do you think deserves to win Love Island?
At this stage I would have to say Jess and Aaron, just because I think they’re both very genuine, they are very much interested in each other… they’re my favourite couple at the moment, I really think they could win. I don’t think Ryan and Lexy are being completely honest with each other in regard to their relationship and things they’ve done in the past and all that, so I feel like they’ll be good in the villa, but on the outside, I don’t see it personally working.
