For more than a decade, John Aiken has been one of the most recognisable faces on Australian reality TV.
As the straight-talking relationship expert on Married At First Sight, he’s known for cutting through excuses, calling out unhealthy dynamics, and delivering reality checks that regularly go viral.
But away from the dinner parties and commitment ceremonies, Aiken leads a far quieter, more grounded life- one shaped by psychology, purpose and a deep belief in emotional accountability.
John Aiken’s career before MAFS
Long before MAFS made him a household name, Aiken was working in the therapy room.
A qualified clinical psychologist born in Sydney, he spent years helping individuals and couples navigate real-world relationship issues- not TV-friendly drama.
That background is what sets him apart on screen. While viewers tune in for fireworks, Aiken’s focus has always remained on attachment styles and emotional responsibility.

Aiken has lived both sides of the Tasman, moving to New Zealand with his family as a child.
Interesting, before he became the straight talking expert on MAFS, Aiken was a professional cricketer and played for Auckland and Wellington in the 1990s and early 2000s!
He has also been painted for the Archibald Prize, with a fan using him as her subject for her submission into to the prestigious competition.
John Aiken’s family life
Off screen, Aiken’s life is refreshingly low-key.
He lives back in Sydney now with his wife, former news reporter Kelly Swanson-Roe, and their children- Aston, 13, and Piper, 10.

John met Kelly in the years after her first husband, Jon Roe, was killed in a canoeing accident in Switzerland.
“She is a very resilient woman and quite inspiring to be around, someone who I look up to and who I have a lot of respect for,” he told 9Now.
From the start of their own relationship, John knew it was important to keep Jon’s memory alive for Kelly.
“Rather than saying, ‘No, I need to be separate with Kelly,’ I just said, ‘I’m going to bring her past partner into the relationship and really make him a part of it all.’”
