The film arrives with enormous anticipation, not only because the original 2016 animated feature became a global cultural touchstone, but also because this new reimagining promises deeper representation, lush Pacific locations, and an entirely fresh cinematic experience.

Directed by Thomas Kail, who’s best known for staging Hamilton, the music will once again be directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

What is the release date for the Moana live-action film?

The Moana live-action movie is set for release in Australian cinemas on 9 July 2026, one day ahead of its international release.

Who is in the cast of the Moana live-action film?

Stepping into the role of Moana is Catherine Lagaʻaia, the 17-year-old Australian actress whose Samoan heritage brings genuine representation that audiences have been eager for.

Joining her is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who returns as the demigod Maui, this time bringing his larger-than-life charisma into a live-action landscape. 

Moana’s parents, Chief Tui and Sina, are portrayed by John Tui and Frankie Adams, while the beloved Gramma Tala is played by Rena Owen.

It’s also worth noting that Auliʻi Cravalho, who originally voiced Moana, is joining the production team as an executive producer.

Yes. On November 17, 2025 Disney released the first-look trailer for the live-action Moana movie.
