Katy Perry has opened up about her year long split with Orlando Bloom when they first started dating, and what led them back together.
During a recent interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast Perry said, “We weren’t really in it from day one.”
“He was because he had just done a huge time of celibacy and he had set intentions. I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was like, I can’t do this anymore. I need to swim in a different pond, but I had to do a lot real work.”
Bloom had attended a week-long retreat called The Hoffman Process which helps to identify negative patterns in your brain developed as a child. It was after his time here that the pair realised they wanted different things.
“He went there, and he wasn’t playing that cat-mouse game anymore,” Perry explained.
“And I was like, ‘This is boring. I’m moving on.’ I was so used to this push-pull. Because once you have it. I was playing games.”
It wasn’t until Perry did the process herself that they saw eye to eye.
“I finally went to Hoffman towards the end of that year that we were separated, and I got the tools…We spoke the same language,” she shared.

After that they reconnected and Bloom proved he was a keeper in 2018 when Perry had a really tough time.
“I showed him the worst of me,” she told Cooper. “I was like, ‘Here’s the next test. I’m gonna show you the craziest b–ch you’ve ever seen,’ and he was like, ‘I’m not shook.’ And I was like, ‘You’re my baby daddy.’ If you’re not shook by this, then we’re going the distance.”
In April 2024 Bloom offered a rare insight into his romance with Perry on another podcast, revealing how the couple initially fell in love.
Speaking on Trevor Noah’s What Now? podcast, Bloom spoke candidly about his early attraction to the pop singer, sharing, “Her music was everywhere, but it wasn’t what I was listening to. I fell in love with Katheryn, this girl from Santa Barbara.”
The Lord of the Rings star also opened up about the couple’s relationship dynamic, stating, “We both meet each other with the understanding [of] what we worked to do, what we had to do, to get to where we got to.”
“She definitely demands that I evolve, and I feel I do the same for her, and that makes for fireworks, but it also makes for a lot of fun and a lot of growth.”
Bloom’s insight into the notoriously private couple comes over one year after the 47-year-old last commented on his romance, previously admitting that his relationship with his long-time fiancee takes work.
“We’re in two very different pools,” he told Flaunt Magazine, continuing, “Her pool is not a pool that I necessarily understand, and I think my pool is not a pool that she necessarily understands. Sometimes things are really, really, really challenging.”
“I won’t lie. We definitely battle with our emotions and creativity, [but] I think we’re both aware of how blessed we are to have uniquely connected in the way that we did at the time that we did, and there’s definitely never a dull moment.”
The couple, who share a four-year-old daughter, first crossed paths in January 2016.
“We bonded over an In-N-Out burger about three years [ago] at the Golden Globes. He stole one off of my table,” Perry told Jimmy Kimmel in 2019.
“He took it, and I was like, ‘Wait! Who — oh, you’re so hot. Fine, take it!’ And then I saw him at a party, and I was like, ‘How are those onions resting on your molars?’ He’s like, ‘I like you.'”
The pair went public with their relationship in May of that year, before they split in February 2017.
“Before rumours or falsifications get out of hand, we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time,” read a statement to Entertainment Tonight.
But the story wasn’t over yet for the two lovebirds, who reconciled in 2018, with Orlando proposing to the singer on Valentine’s day 2019.
The pair welcomed their daughter, Daisy Dove in August 2020.
Despite rumours circulating that the pair had tied the knot, they have repeatedly shut down speculation. During an interview on The Kyle and Jackie O Show in February 2022, Perry blamed the COVID-19 pandemic on the wedding delay.
“Every couple of months it’s like new variant! New variant! New variant!” she said, explaining, “It’s a destination location. We’re still trying for it to work out.”
