On Love Island Australia, the Islanders aren’t the only ones playing games. For seasons, the mysterious Superfans have had a say in the villa drama, leaving viewers wondering who they are and whether production is secretly calling the shots.
Now, familiar faces are stepping in to help run the show. The Power Couples are back, and this time they’re not looking for love. They’re helping steer the drama, and host Sophie Monk says they’re responsible for some of the moves that make this season so good.
Sophie told WHO just how much power the ex-Islanders will have over the villa, the moves they’ll make and why having the former success stories call the shots could change the game entirely.
Consider this a warning to anyone planning to coast through the villa unnoticed.
What is the Power Couples twist?
Season eight sees Love Island Australia swap Spain for the famous Love Island USA villa in tropical Fiji. But the biggest shake-up isn’t the location; it’s who gets to influence what happens inside the villa.
Returning are season four winners Claudia and Austen, season five’s Kale and Tyra and Georgia and Nate, season six’s Eric and Kaylah, and season seven’s Kye and Yana and Connor and Isabel.
Unlike the anonymous Superfans, these are people viewers already know. They’ve survived the recouplings, the heartbreak and the inevitable head-turning themselves, so they know exactly how quickly a villa romance can go from happily coupled up to an absolute mess.
The Superfans were introduced to influence decisions in the pre-recorded Australian series, but their identities stayed under wraps. That mystery has often left viewers questioning who was behind the calls. With the Power Couples, at least we know who’s pulling the levers, even if we have no idea what they’ll do with them.
And according to Sophie, the returning Islanders aren’t just there to wave hello and reminisce about their own time on the show. They have a genuine say in what happens next.
‘They think like the audience‘
For Sophie, the Power Couples bring something different because they’re still together, passionate about the show and familiar with the emotional rollercoaster the new Islanders are about to experience.
“It’s all like the strongest couples that are still together, so they have a lot of say in it, and they’re so passionate,” she told WHO.
“It’s amazing because they think like the audience,” Sophie added, explaining that the couples are “watching everything” and are “responsible for quite a few moves in there”.
In other words, the new Islanders aren’t just navigating crushes, recouplings and the temptation to stray. They’ve also got former contestants watching their every move and helping shape the game. Nothing like having your love life scrutinised by people who’ve already been through it.

Sophie also sees a difference between bringing back established couples and asking a Superfan to weigh in on the drama.
“Rather than like a super fan, it’s them,” she said.
It’s one of the reasons Sophie feels the new season has come together so well. Between the Fiji setting, the fresh cast and the returning couples, she believes the ingredients are finally clicking.
“It’s just like everything clicked,” she said.
Because one version of the drama isn’t enough
For anyone who already analyses every sideways glance like it’s a criminal investigation, there’s more to get stuck into this season. Stan’s Love Island Australia: Unseen. Uncut. gives fans extra footage from inside the villa, including longer conversations and dates.
“There are so many levels we see too,” Sophie explained. “There’s the uncut version on Stan, so if they’re on a date, we’ll just say, ‘Here’s the whole thing’.”
That means more time to dissect the flirting, scrutinise the awkward silences and decide whether someone’s head is about to turn. Because apparently, watching a full date unfold is no longer enough. We need the director’s cut, too.
Sophie said fans can “just go deeper and deeper” and “fully immerse yourself in it as a fan”.
Between the Power Couples helping steer the action and the extra footage on Stan, there’ll be plenty for viewers to debate this season. The Islanders might be looking for love, but the ex-Islanders have their own game to play. And for everyone watching at home, that could make the villa even harder to look away from.
