Wolf Creek

Three young backpackers return from a hike to find their car won’t start. After accepting help from an unassuming Aussie bloke named Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) they are taken captive and after a brief escape, are hunted down, tortured and brutally murdered. It’s an Australian classic, but perhaps the most chilling aspect of this film is that it markets itself as being “based on true events.” And Mick Taylor – with his cowboy hat and that terrifying cackle – sure does bear a scary resemblance to infamous Aussie serial killer Ivan Milat who murdered seven people in a state forest in Sydney.

IT

It’s the latest horror movie to hit the cinemas, and it’s not one for the faint-hearted.  Receiving rave reviews, and based on Steven King’s 1986 novel, the film, set in a small town with a horrifying history, follows a bunch of kids as they face up against a terrifyingly evil clown named Pennywise who hides in drains and reels children in, only to later kill them.

Silence of the Lambs

It’s a mesmerizing thriller that is so cleverly written that despite its goriness – which includes a cannibal killer – it’s impossible to look away from the screen, even if your hands are in front of your eyes.  The film follows young detective Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) and her search for ‘Buffalo Bill’ an evil, perverted killer who has an obsession with overweight women, and plans to skin all his victims to make a skin suit.

Strangers

What makes this film so horrifying is that the premise is feasible. Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman) are hoping to have a relaxing weekend away at their vacation home when intruders raid their home and try to kill them while they hide their identity with creepy masks. There are plenty of unexpected twists and turns which will leave you on the edge of your seat.

A quiet place

Featuring a star-studded cast including Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, the film is set in 2020 and most of the human population has been killed by alien creatures who attack anyone who makes a sound. This means that the Abbott family, and their young children, are forced to live in silence. Along the way, they try their hardest to avoid the violent creatures who are planning to murder them the moment they make a peep.
