Taking to Instagram, the national treasure and beloved Australian musician shared a video of himself walking while hooked up to a drip, letting his followers know that while he’s recovering nicely, he will be taking a month off to rest.

“Wow I’m glad that’s over, now the recovery begins,” he captioned the 5-second video. “Huge thanks to all my surgeons and nurses! And also thanks for all your well wishes. I had a pretty big operation yesterday with a spinal fusion of L5 S1 and disc replacement of L4 L5. The chronic pain was getting to much to handle.

It’s no secret the Australian Idol runner up has long suffered issues with his back. In 2010, the dad-of-four suffered a horrific back injury during his time on Dancing With The Stars, leaving him with permanent nerve damage. Despite having undergone an emergency laminectomy days after pulling out of the competition, he says he’s never been the same since.

“A lot has happened over the past six or seven years and it took a long time to get past that back injury and get back to being fit,” he told news.com.au in 2017, hours before releasing his first album in seven years titled Unbroken. “There’s been lots of ups and downs and I got through it and now I am really enjoying touring probably more than I ever have.”

Although he said he’s tried to live a relatively normal life since injuring himself, the “Lift” singer says there’s a lot he can’t do.

“Travel seems to be the worst thing for my back,” he told News Mail in 2018. “Sitting in planes and cars for hours on end doesn’t agree with it, so I’ve got to try to keep in shape and keep some strength around it.”
