You’d be excused for not knowing who Zach Merrett and his wife, Alexandra Merrett, are. No shade! We just know many of you aren’t huge AFL fans.
However, the two of them have been all over the news recently after one teeny tiny social media post, and if, like us, you’re trying to get across it, then let us enlighten you.
There’s been an onslaught of criticism thrown Alexandra’s way, but we would like to acknowledge that all she might be guilty of is simply saying the quiet thing out loud about being a WAG — but we’ll let you be the judge of it.
Who is Alexandra Merrett?
Alexandra Merrett is the wife of AFL player Zach Merrett, who plays for Melbourne-based club Essendon.
It’s unknown exactly when the couple met, but they’ve been together for at least seven years, with the pair getting married in January.
They share a little boy together, Jude, who is one.
Why is Alexandra Merrett facing criticism?
Alexandra caused a stir over the weekend when she posted on social media, admitting to leaving her husband’s game against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night and heading to a wine bar instead as his team were getting absolutely thrashed.
In the now deleted post, Alexandra confessed to leaving with the following caption.
“When your husband’s team is losing by 50 points at halftime so you go to Gimlet instead”.

Cue an onslaught of criticism, with footy fans blasting her lack of support for her husband and his team.
A ‘get ready with me’ video she posted prior to the game was also flooded with comments.
“What’s the point of doing this if you leave by half time?” one person wrote.
However, others have argued that Alexandra just said the quiet thing out loud about supporting your partner when they’re kind of just not doing well, and how that’s relatable — whether they’re a professional footballer or you’re left standing at the sidelines of an amateur game cheering on your partner on the weekend.
“What a joke. Let her eat her scallops in peace. There’s more to life than football even if you are married to a high profile [player],” someone said.
The real contention lies in the fact that Zach requested a trade to Hawthorn last year (which was unsuccessful), so lost favour with Essendon fans.
