Is Running Point based on a true story?
While Running Point is a work of fiction, it draws inspiration from real-life figures in the sports world—most notably Jeanie Buss, the president and co-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. Jeanie, who broke barriers as a woman leading an NBA team, serves as an executive producer on the show.
Kate Hudson has even spoken about how Buss’s experiences helped shape her character, bringing authenticity to Isla’s journey in the high-stakes world of professional basketball.
“Having known Jeanie since I was a teenager, I felt a unique connection to the character,” Kate previously told Tudum. “Jeanie’s life and career in the male-dominated world of professional basketball are inspiring, and her willingness to let us explore a comedic version of that world was liberating.

When her brother spectacularly flames out as president of the Los Angeles Waves, Isla is handed the reins and told to figure it out. The problem? Mindy Kaling, the mastermind behind Never Have I Ever and The Mindy Project, brings her signature wit and heart to the series. “I really love writing shows about ambitious women,” Mindy told Tedum, explaining why Isla’s journey is one audiences will connect with—whether they’re basketball fans or not.
