If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if a powerhouse businesswoman suddenly found herself at the helm of a major pro basketball team, this show has your answer—plus plenty of slam dunks, sibling rivalries, and locker room drama to keep things interesting.

Kate stars as Isla Gordon, a savvy executive who unexpectedly finds herself running the Los Angeles Waves after her brother flames out in spectacular fashion. Taking over a professional basketball team is no small feat, and Isla quickly learns that proving herself in a male-dominated world won’t be as simple as drawing up a playbook.

With an all-star cast including Scott MacArthur, Drew Tarver, Max Greenfield, and Brenda Song, Running Point is packed with humour, heart, and just enough sports action to keep things exciting.

Is Running Point on Netflix yet?

Almost! You can catch all the action starting February 27, when Running Point officially drops on Netflix.

Is Running Point based on a true story?

While Running Point is a work of fiction, it draws inspiration from real-life figures in the sports world—most notably Jeanie Buss, the president and co-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. Jeanie, who broke barriers as a woman leading an NBA team, serves as an executive producer on the show.

Kate Hudson has even spoken about how Buss’s experiences helped shape her character, bringing authenticity to Isla’s journey in the high-stakes world of professional basketball.

“Having known Jeanie since I was a teenager, I felt a unique connection to the character,” Kate previously told Tudum. “Jeanie’s life and career in the male-dominated world of professional basketball are inspiring, and her willingness to let us explore a comedic version of that world was liberating.

What is Running Point about?

Isla Gordon has always been ambitious, but her family never really took her seriously—until now. When her brother spectacularly flames out as president of the Los Angeles Waves, Isla is handed the reins and told to figure it out. The problem? She has to win over a sceptical board, a team full of eccentric personalities, and, most importantly, her own doubting brothers.

As she fights to prove she belongs, Isla navigates locker room politics, high-stakes negotiations, and a whole lot of hilarious mishaps along the way.

Mindy Kaling, the mastermind behind Never Have I Ever and The Mindy Project, brings her signature wit and heart to the series. “I really love writing shows about ambitious women,” Mindy told Tedum, explaining why Isla’s journey is one audiences will connect with—whether they’re basketball fans or not.

Who is in the cast of Running Point?

Kate Hudson takes centre court as Isla, leading a cast that includes Drew Tarver as her brilliant but neurotic CFO brother, Scott MacArthur as her overly enthusiastic general manager sibling, and Max Greenfield as her ever-supportive fiancé. Brenda Song brings her signature sharp humour as Ali Lee, the no-nonsense chief of staff who knows how to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.

On the basketball side, Running Point introduces a colourful lineup of Waves players and staff, including Jay Ellis as the team’s legendary coach, Toby Sandeman as a superstar player struggling with his legacy, and Chet Hanks as a point guard who’s just as passionate about his rap career as he is about basketball.
