Watching You is the thrilling mini-series *everyone* will soon be talking about.
The show follows Lina, a woman who, after being secretly filmed during a one-night stand, finds herself at the mercy of a mysterious blackmailer.
Featuring an all-Australian cast, led by Aisha Dee and Josh Helman, Watching You will have you on the edge of your seat right to the very end!
WHO was lucky enough to sit down with Aisha and Josh to talk about all things Watching You; you can read the full interview below (but beware: minor spoilers lie ahead).
WHO: The series tackles some heavy themes; adultery, blackmail, voyeurism, murder… What was the vibe like on set? Was it quite serious or did you manage to have a little fun?
Josh: We snuck a bit of fun in. I mean, there’s certain stuff that I feel like we were trying to be reverential to, in terms of some of the heavier stuff, but, you know, I think we all really got along very well. It’s a great crew and a great cast. Yeah, we had a bit of fun.
Aisha: I think it was a good balance of being able to go to the places that we needed to go to, and then also, I think as a self care measure, it’s nice to be able to come back to reality and know that we were telling a story.
But yeah, we were really blessed with the most incredible crew and cast, and everyone worked together to give us the best ability to continue telling the story because it’s a hectic schedule when you’re doing something like that.
Josh: Yeah, it’s a lot of work. Particularly for you [Aisha]. You got put through the ringer on this.
Aisha: Yeah, I wasn’t well when we wrapped. But I loved it! I loved every second of it. But it definitely takes it out of you. But I think also out of respect for people in the real world who are experiencing this, we had a really good balance.
The show is built on mistrust and misdirection. As actors, how did you keep track of what your character ‘knows’ versus what the audience ‘knows’?
Josh: I feel like that’s a different question for each of us, because of the nature of my character.
What I found difficult about my character was that – I don’t know if it’s a particularly apt analogy but – I felt like I was playing like 3D chess, because it was a constant thing of being like, ‘What am I trying to convince this person of, what’s really happening, do I have to thread the needle between what this person thinks and what this person thinks?’ It was such a mind f.
Aisha: Mind f?
Josh: Mind f**k. I’m sorry, I’m trying to have a little bit of decorum.
Aisha: I don’t know why you’re trying to do that in front of me.
Josh: The crew’s not as disgusting as you are, Aisha.
Aisha: Yeah, I’m a foul b*tch [laughs].
Josh: [laughs] But it got so much easier for me as the thing went on because, yeah, I could just be insane.
Aisha: It was, at times, difficult. I think less so when thinking about, ‘Oh, what do I know? What do I not know?’ Because there was a way to just kind of lean into the reality of exactly where we were in that moment.
I think the difficulty for me came from the kind of whiplash of where my emotional space was, specifically when it came to us [her and Josh], because we would film a scene where I’m getting dragged out of a car and strangled, followed by we’re in love.
And I think that was kind of challenging at times, but also just the best challenge. I sound like such a theater nerd, but I loved the challenge of doing this show. I’ve never done something with quite this much width and breadth to it.
It was a huge challenge, but I was so blessed with Josh – he was the best scene partner and also just kind of a dummy. Sorry, I had to take his ego down a notch.
The series was inspired by J.P. Pomare’s novel The Last Guests. Did either of you read it before filming?
Josh: No, we both knew going in that the series was going to kind of segue away from the story of the novel a little bit.
So, just to kind of preserve what the nature of the story was – our version – we opted just to base everything on the scripts. We thought that would just be a little bit cleaner.
Certainly no disrespect to the author; just because the story was different, we thought that was the smartest way to do things.
Aisha: Yeah, to go in with a clean idea of what it could be. It just felt right for us.
If you could give your character one piece of advice at the start of Episode One, what would it be?
Josh: Don’t change a thing, everything’s going to go great.
Aisha: Ooft. For Lina, maybe, have you thought about therapy? I think they all need a little bit of therapy.
And maybe, for Lina, have you tried being by yourself? For like five minutes?
Which, [I] can relate. I mean, I think that’s why I love Lina so much, why she is so lovable, because she’s kind of a romantic really. That’s why she finds herself in the situation that she does.
If you had to describe Watching You in just three words, what would your three words be?
Josh: Literally, the first thing that came in my mind was, ‘Hot sexy mess.’ And I don’t know how I feel about that, but in the moment, it feels right.
Aisha: Okay, go with it. Go with God.
Josh: Go with God.
Aisha: I was gonna say messy. Messy, dangerous… and nature!
