Is there going to be a Big Little Lies Season 3?
Yes! Big Little Lies is officially returning for another season, with star Nicole Kidman initially teasing the news in November 2023, telling the CME Group Tour Championship crowd, “We’re bringing you a third [season], just FYI.”
Although the cast has not shared too much info on the next instalment of the Monterey-based murder mystery, they have offered a few tidbits on production.
Following Nicole’s bombshell news of a third season, co-star Reese Witherspoon further confirmed that pre-production was underway, telling Variety, “We are working on it. [Nicole Kidman] and I have been working on it a lot.”
Over a year after word of Big Little Lies Season 3 dropped, Shailene Woodley gave a long-awaited update, telling The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, “I ran into Nicole Kidman a few months ago and I was like, ‘So, what’s the…’ and she’s like, ‘It’s happening.'”
Shedding light on the production delays, Shailene added, “I think it’s a lot of people with a lot of schedules, and our beautiful director [Jean-Marc Vallee] from Season 1 passed away and that was really hard for everyone. I think the whole experience has been a little bit one of trying to find all the right pieces to come together.”
What is Big Little Lies about?
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Based on the 2014 novel by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies has quickly become a go-to for fans of a murder mystery. Sporting an all-star cast including Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz, Big Little Lies is also the first TV project released by Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine.
At the very beginning of the pilot episode, it’s revealed that someone has been murdered at a school fundraiser, but neither the victim nor the culprit is revealed at the time.
We go on to meet the families of six first graders as they begin their first day at school, but when one of the children accuses another of bullying, a whole chain of distressing events is set off.
As the series progresses, we learn more about Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata and Bonnie, known as ‘The Monterey Five’, who eventually bear witness to the murder foretold at the beginning of the series.
At this stage, there’s been no information on what season three could be about, but Reese did give a brief update on the show’s progress to E! News in October 2024.
“Nicole and I have been waiting,” she explained. “We’re in waiting for Liane Moriarty. She’s going to be turning in something very soon. We’re back to the original author and we’re going to go back to the original characters.”
“It’s exciting, too, because I think the kids are probably a little bit older now,” she continued. “So that might add another element. I don’t know yet, I haven’t read it yet.”
Who is the cast of Big Little Lies?
Originally, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon optioned the screen rights for Liane Moriarty’s novel less than a month after its release and came on as executive producers while also starring in the show.
Reese portrays the ‘alpha female’ in town, Madeline Mackenzie, while Nicole plays Celeste Wright, a beautiful ex-lawyer with a seemingly perfect husband and young twin boys.
Zoe Kravitz also starred in the series as Bonnie, the new wife of Madeline’s ex-husband, while Shailene Woodley starred as Jane, a young mother who is new to town. The five was rounded out by Laura Dern in the role of Renata Klein, whose daughter is the victim of bullying.
The second season also saw the addition of Meryl Streep to the cast, and we can’t possibly imagine a more powerhouse group of women in the one show.
