25 years after Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus first combated Agent Smith, The Matrix is returning for a fifth film.
Confirming the news in April 2024, Warner Bros. announced that The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard has officially signed on to write and direct the next instalment of The Matrix universe.
The new Matrix film will also be the first of the franchise not to directly involve the series’ creators and directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski, however, it has been reported that Lana will join the project as an executive producer.
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honouring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series,” Warner Bros. President of Production Jesse Ehrman shared in a statement.

What is the new Matrix movie about?
While the exact details of the plotline are yet to be confirmed, it is believed that the story of the fifth Matrix film will expand upon the re-established world of the 2021 sequel, The Matrix: Resurrections.
Despite receiving some less-than-favourable reviews, The Matrix: Resurrections reignited fan fervour surrounding the cult film franchise, with the film seeing Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss re-enter the everchanging world of Matrix 60 years after their first battle.
Who is the cast of the new Matrix movie?
Although Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss made their return to The Matrix in 2021, it has not yet been confirmed whether or not they will be returning to reprise their roles in the fifth Matrix film.
As for the rest of the cast, the most recent sequel saw the introduction of a number of new faces into The Matrix universe, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jonathan Groff, and Jada Pinkett Smith joining the lineup.
Despite the growing list of characters, any details surrounding who will be returning to The Matrix have so far been kept a closely guarded secret.
