When The Big Bang Theory drew to a close after 12 seasons in 2019, fans were rightfully devastated. But, the initial blow was softened by news of a prequel centred on the early life of the one and only Sheldon Cooper.
Prequels and spinoffs of well-loved shows are always a risk, and their successes are often varied – but Young Sheldon, which premiered in 2017 was an instant hit, bringing new fans and beloved Big Bang Theory aficionados into the household of the Coopers.
Now, as the seventh and final season comes to Disney+, we’re rounding up everything you need to know about the beloved sitcom, finale details and spinoff rumours.

What Young Sheldon Season 7 about?
By now, fans will know what the finale will entail and we don’t want to spoil anything here. But, as it’s been widely reported, it’s safe to say it’s centred around the death of Sheldon’s father, an event referenced by Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory often.
Despite the tragic subject matter, the series maintains its sense of fun and puts into place the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle to revealing why Sheldon is the man we came to know and love.
“As a prequel series to one of the biggest comedies, Young Sheldon proved that lightning can strike twice,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach told Variety last year.
“It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought the characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start… We look forward to seeing their final season unfold and giving it a proper send-off with the best episodes yet for fans to enjoy,” she continued.
One thing that is definitely worth tuning in for is seeing Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik both reprise their roles as The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farrah Fowler in the finale.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight last year, Parsons reflected on his final reprisal of the iconic character, telling the publication, “It was beautiful. It was even more beautiful than I expected it to be.”
“One of the reasons I was excited to do it is because what they wrote is so sweet and I think they worked Mayim and I into that show beautifully… To get to go with Mayim, in a world [where] we’re guests and revisit these characters a little older [is] just a completely different circumstance.”
Returning to the world of The Big Bang Theory for the first time in five years, Parsons revealed that the process of embodying his iconic character was not as easy as he had imagined.
“I really thought it would be like putting on a pair of old shoes, and then eventually it was, but not for about an hour or so.”
Will there be a Young Sheldon Spin-off series?
In 2023, series creator Chuck Lorre teased a potential new series set in The Big Bang Theory Universe.
After months of fan theories over what the show would entail, it was recently confirmed that US network CBS had greenlit a spin-off centred on George Cooper (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment). However, no other details have been announced and both CMS and Warner Bros. TV declined to comment.
