Who plays Supergirl in 2025?

Australian actor Milly Alcock is stepping into the coveted cape, making her first starring role in the DC Universe following her cameo as Supergirl in Superman earlier this year.

Unlike past portrayals that leaned toward traditional heroism, this Supergirl promises a tonal shift: part interstellar quest, part character study. The trailer juxtaposes high-octane action sequences and cosmic visuals with intimations of Kara’s inner turmoil after surviving Krypton’s destruction — highlighting how her worldview diverges from her more idealistic cousin, Superman.

“I thought, ‘What have I done?’, the House of the Dragon star told Forbes of winning the part. “I really struggled to believe I could do it. I even called the director (James Gunn) saying, ‘I don’t know how to be that person. I’m just me.’”

Ultimately, Milly accepted the news, telling Elle Australia that she “invited all my friends over to the house, and we drank champagne” to celebrate the achievement. Telling the publication of her audition process, Milly said, “For Supergirl, it was myself and another girl [in the screen test]. It was really scary; I thought I was going to vomit! But it’s just fear! That’s what happens! This job has been a journey of overcoming my own fear.”
