August 2008 – Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez first meet
During the height of the Disney Channel domination, Wizards of Waverly Place star Selena Gomez was first spotted alongside Taylor Swift while on a double date with their boyfriends, Nick Jonas and Joe Jonas.
“It was amazing because [Taylor] was the girl with the big curly hair and all the bracelets and the cowboy boots. I was definitely up-and-coming, and we just clicked. It was the best thing we got out of those relationships,” Gomez previously told KISS FM.
“We actually dated the Jonas Brothers together! It was hysterical.”
September 2008 – Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez make their red-carpet debut
Just over one month since the pair were first spotted together, Selena and Taylor debuted their friendship on the red carpet of Selena’s first feature film A Cinderella Story.
October 2009 – Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez open up on their friendship
One year into their blossoming friendship, Taylor and Selena were already proving to be friendship goals, with Gomez supporting her new best friend on her Fearless Tour across the U.S.
Gomez also gushed about her friendship with the pop-country singer, telling Seventeen, “If I ever have an issue, Taylor has gone through it because she’s older than me and she gives the most thought-out answers… Every single problem I ever have is healable by Taylor Swift.”
“What I love about Taylor is that she does believe in the whole love story and Prince Charming and soulmates [so] because of her, I haven’t lost faith.”
Gomez also shared how she helped Swift through her breakup with Joe Jonas, telling Seventeen, “When she was going through a hard time, we would make each other playlists. I would send her some girl-empowering music, and she would send me some back.”
January 2011 – Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez attend the People’s Choice Awards
As both Taylor and Selena began to make it big in the music world, the famous friends began to be recognised for their exceptional talents, with Gomez taking home the Favourite Breakout Artist award and Swift winning the Favourite Country Artist award at the 2011 People’s Choice Awards.

Swift took to Twitter in July 2013 to celebrate Gomez’s 21st birthday milestone; sharing an adorable photo of the duo posing alongside a mermaid statue.

October 2014 – Selena Gomez celebrates the release of Taylor Swift’s 1989 album
In October 2014, Selena took to Instagram to share a heartwarming tribute to her bestie Taylor ahead of the release of her 1989 album.
“From hotel room album listening parties, kitchen dance floor album listening parties to driving on the PCH, windows down album listening parties – The best part is we were the only ones there each time. So happy, honoured, and proud to know you and your diaries,” Gomez wrote alongside a collage of throwback pictures of the duo.
August 2015 – Selena Gomez performs at Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour
Taylor and Selena brought their friendship to the stage in their surprise performance of Gomez’s hit Good For You at the Los Angeles stop of Swift’s 1989 World Tour.

August 2015 – Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez bring Bad Blood to MTV Video Music Awards red carpet
Following the success of Swift’s now iconic music video for her single Bad Blood, the singer brought the girl power the the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet alongside her bestie Selena Gomez.
The duo were joined by fellow stars Gigi Hadid, Martha Hunt, Hailee Steinfeld, Cara Delevigne, Serayah, Mariska Hargitay, Lily Aldridge, and Karlie Kloss.
February 2016 – Taylor Swift wins big at the Grammy Awards
Taylor Swift made history at the 2016 Grammy Awards when she became the first woman to receive the prestigious Album of the Year award twice.
Both Gomez and Swift were spotted together on the red carpet and throughout the ceremony, with Gomez cheering for Swift when she received her Grammy.
May 2018 – Selena Gomez performs at Taylor Swift’s Reputation Tour
The famous friends took to the stage together for a third time during the Los Angeles leg of Swift’s Reputation Tour.

January 2020 – Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez reflect on their friendship
After 12 years of friendship, both Taylor and Selena opened up about their relationship over the years to the Wall Street Journal Magazine.
Reflecting on their friendship, Swift told the publication, “There has always been this quality of sisterhood, and I don’t say that in a basic way. I knew from when I met her I would always have her back.”
“There’s so much of my friendship with Taylor that people don’t know about… She has shown up for me in ways that I would have never expected… It’s been proven year after year and in every moment of my life that she is one of my best friends in the world,” Gomez said, adding, “We don’t agree on everything, but we respect each other with everything.”

Taylor and Selena were each other’s biggest cheerleaders throughout the 2023 MTV VMA ceremony, with fans frequently spotting the pair in the crowd loudly cheering for one another as they went on stage to receive their multiple awards of the night.
