We’ve seen a lot of big moments play out for Chantel and Wyatt on The Block this season. The budget blunder by production remains one of the biggest moments so far, dividing viewers and ultimately landing Wyatt with an unfavourable nickname (and reputation) that seems to have stuck.
However, another moment from Tuesday night’s episode during kitchen week has fans convinced the pair aren’t actually a couple at all.
When asked by production why they were both doing the show, they each had very different answers.
For Chantel, she said she ultimately wanted the prize money for her children.
“I would love to be able to put that prize money into getting a house for me and the kids. That’s what I want to be able to do… That’s the goal.”
She spoke about how she didn’t want to be a “single mum” who struggled to afford things for her children (bearing in mind, she did make the ‘quote-unquote’ gesture with her fingers when she said, “single mum”).
Wyatt spoke about his desire to have “freedom” of time.
“I don’t care for money; I care for free time. Freedom is the end goal. I want to wake up and do what I want to do, every single day,” he said.
The producer pushed him further on this, bringing up his aspirations to be an actor.
Wyatt admitted that, yes, that desire to pursue acting had also encouraged him to apply for The Block.
“My dream would absolutely be to become an actor,” he said, explaining he hopes the show could be a “profile lift”.
Predictably, viewers didn’t like this answer and called it “rude” — which, admittedly, is surprising, because why does anyone go on reality TV anymore? — and it sparked hundreds of comments online with claims that the couple aren’t actually together anymore and are simply using the show as a vehicle to reach their respective goals.
WHO spoke to Chantel and Wyatt about the doubt shadowing their relationship.
What have fans said about Chantel and Wyatt’s relationship?
With the honest (and somewhat different) confessions about going on The Block, fans quickly concluded that they weren’t compatible with each other, and that the relationship is “fake”.
“Did the chick from House 2 just say she doesn’t want to struggle as a single mum? That’s why she wants prize money,” one fan said, believing Chantel labelling herself as a “single mum” pointed to admission she was no longer with Wyatt.
“They separated before filming started, but agreed to go on the show together,” another claimed, with a similar sentiment shared by a third fan.
“They weren’t together when the filming started but stayed together for the exposure. It’s always about her and her kids.”
However, others stepped in and said just because they want different things doesn’t ultimately mean they’re a) not together or b) not compatible.
“They are probably in a newish relationship and are still working out what they are. She is in it to buy her kids a home, and he is in it for fame (to start an acting career).”
Rumours about Chantel and Wyatt’s breakup
Before the season aired, the Daily Mail claimed the couple had broken up sometime between the wrap of filming and the show’s August premiere.
Last week, the couple argued on the show, with Chantel calling Wyatt “rude” and hanging up the phone on him, which subsequently resulted in Wyatt storming off-site, furthering rumours that the couple aren’t “serious”.
Are Chantel and Wyatt still together?
Chantel and Wyatt confirmed to WHO that, despite all the noise, they are very much still together.
They said they found all the rumours “funny” and ultimately, they don’t feel like they have anything to prove.
“It’s just like something to laugh about,” Chantel said.
“Honestly, I don’t take it too seriously because I feel like people are just going to talk about it forever, you know, so there’s nothing that we could even say to prove that we are [still together].
“It’s just one of those things that you just kind of have to laugh about,” Chantel said.
The couple met at their gym on the Gold Coast and have been together for two years. They live together with Chantel’s three children.
