Viewers of The Block love three things: a beautiful room reveal, a dramatic budget blowout and giving contestants nicknames they definitely didn’t ask for.
Unfortunately for Wyatt, he’s already ticked off two.
Following Monday night’s fiery episode, viewers have now dubbed the contestant “The Incredible Sulk” after watching his reaction to a major production error that incorrectly inflated the cost of his and partner Chantel’s guest bedroom.
Was the couple right about the money? Yes.
Did viewers think he handled the situation particularly well? That’s where things get complicated.
While some fans understood his frustration, others felt his reaction was far bigger than the mistake — especially when he and Chantel refused to return to the building site the following day and began questioning whether they wanted to remain in the competition.
Speaking to WHO about the confrontation, Chantel and Wyatt explained why being dismissed by Scotty Cam and production pushed them over the edge.
Quick recap: How did we get here?
During Sunday night’s room reveal, Chantel and Wyatt were told they had spent $20,700 on their guest bedroom.
The couple immediately disputed the figure, insisting they had spent closer to $12,500.
Production eventually discovered that a builder’s invoice had been entered twice, meaning thousands of dollars had mistakenly been added to their total.
So, Chantel and Wyatt were correct. The maths was not mathing.
However, being right wasn’t enough to save Wyatt from the wrath of Block viewers, who had plenty to say about the way he reacted to the situation and his subsequent conversation with Scotty and executive producer Julian on the show.
“Yes, the accountant made a mistake, but there was no reason to carry on like they did,” one fan commented online. “How about just being calm and asking if it can be investigated?”
One viewer perhaps captured the general mood best: “I understand his frustration. I don’t understand his reaction.”
In other words, viewers agreed Wyatt had every right to be upset. They just weren’t convinced he needed to go full Incredible Hulk — sorry, Sulk — over it.
What was Chantel and Wyatt’s concern over the budget error?
For Chantel and Wyatt, this wasn’t simply a matter of someone accidentally adding an extra invoice to a spreadsheet.
With thousands of dollars unaccounted for, they began wondering what production believed had happened to the money and whether there was an implication that they had acted dishonestly.
Chantel admitted the discrepancy created “a lot of distrust”, particularly because the couple knew they hadn’t spent the amount announced.
“We were trying to rattle through our heads why it was like that and what could have been going on,” she told WHO.
“We just felt a bit uneasy, I guess.”
The pair attempted to dispute the figure after the room reveal, but Wyatt claimed they struggled to convince anyone to listen.
“He [Scotty] sort of shut it down and said, ‘We’ll speak about it tomorrow,'” Wyatt told WHO. “We tried to speak up on multiple occasions.”
They then approached members of the finance and production teams, but Wyatt said they continued to be assured that the figure had been checked and was correct.
Essentially, Chantel and Wyatt knew someone needed to reach for a calculator, but nobody was interested in doing the sums again, and it made them question if they were being used as pawns to create good TV.
How have Chantel and Wyatt responded to fan backlash?
Before the episode aired, Chantel admitted she was nervous that viewers would consider their response overly dramatic.
“We know exactly what happened on that night and the following morning, so it just depends how it comes across on screen,” she told WHO.
Judging by the arrival of “The Incredible Sulk”, her instincts were correct.
“A lot of people may think that was very dramatic of us, but they weren’t there in that moment, and they weren’t feeling what we were feeling and what we were going through,” she said.
Wyatt also insisted their anger wasn’t simply about the money.
For him, the bigger issue was feeling unable to defend himself or Chantel while their integrity was being questioned.
“I feel like everyone deserves the same rights and to be able to be valued, respected and listened to,” he said.
“I don’t care if you’re the Queen or if you’re myself; everyone deserves the same time of day, in my opinion.”
Production’s eventual discovery proved they had every right to challenge the figures. Whether it justified the scale of their reaction is another calculation entirely.
Did Chantel and Wyatt leave The Block?
After the room reveal, Chantel and Wyatt didn’t return to the building site and seriously considered leaving the competition altogether.
However, once the duplicated invoice was discovered, Scotty and Julian sat down with the couple and offered them a sincere apology.
They also made it clear that Chantel and Wyatt had done nothing dishonest and that the error sat with production.
After taking some time to consider their future, the pair accepted the apology and decided to remain on The Block.
Some viewers were pleased to see the renovation crisis resolved before the couple had even completed their second room.
“I’m glad they talked about it and have decided to stay,” commented one fan.
So, the tools aren’t being packed away, and Chantel and Wyatt will continue building their house — although they now have an entire day of missed work to catch up on.
As for “The Incredible Sulk”? It may prove slightly harder to remove from Wyatt’s reputation with fans.
