It was meant to be a wholesome night of wisdom on The Block with some familiar faces returning to help this year’s contestants navigate the chaos. Instead, things got a little awkward.

Last year’s Blockheads Mat and Robby, and Sonny and Alicia, surprised the teams at family dinner. They came armed with advice from their own time on the show, but the friendly catch-up took a turn when Wyatt announced he was leaving dinner to hit the gym. Mat appeared less than impressed, mocking Wyatt for wanting to work out at that time of night.

And, as viewers quickly saw, Wyatt wasn’t exactly ready to let it slide.

Speaking to the cameras afterwards, Wyatt made it clear he wasn’t impressed by the interaction.

“Mat’s too loud and a bit rude in the way he comes across. I’m sorry but… his personality on TV frustrated me. If it’s OK for him to be rude, I don’t see how it’s not ok for me to go and workout,” Wyatt said.

Courtney and Sev weigh in on the awkward exchange

Wyatt’s fellow contestants Courtney and Sev have spoken to WHO about some behind-the-scenes tension and what it was like to watch the awkward exchange unfold.

Courtney said she didn’t know much about the history between Wyatt and Mat but admits that Mat came into the dinner “hot, hot, all guns blazing”.

She said Mat had “a massive go” at Chantel and Wyatt for going to the gym, and she also felt the pair were left uncomfortable by what she described as “a lot of personal attacks”.

But Courtney also believes there was an important reason behind Wyatt’s decision to leave the dinner that wasn’t necessarily obvious to everyone watching.

Wyatt made it clear he wasn’t impressed by the interaction with All Star Blockhead Mat.

There’s more to Wyatt’s gym routine than viewers see

Despite being branded as a ‘gym bro’ on the show, Courtney said there is a more genuine reason that Wyatt is so committed to the gym, and it’s not as superficial as viewers might think.

“One thing that doesn’t really translate in the show is [that] Wyatt needs the gym not only for, you know, mental health [and to] blow off steam; that’s his way of unwinding for the day,” she explained.

Wyatt also has type one diabetes. According to Courtney, it plays an important role in his approach to exercise and his lifestyle.

“He’s also got type one diabetes, so he doesn’t have a choice but to stay incredibly healthy and eat properly and not have any alcohol and, you know, go to the gym. That’s what keeps his levels at bay.”

Sev agreed that the situation was unfortunate. She felt contestants could easily make assumptions when they didn’t know the full context behind someone’s actions.

“I felt bad for them,” Sev admitted.

Despite the awkward moment, Courtney stressed that the evening wasn’t a write-off. She and Sev loved having the returning contestants back in the competition. The All Stars had plenty of wisdom to share. Although, as Courtney put it, some of it came with a little more attitude than others.

Wyatt and Mat clearly didn’t hit it off during their first meeting. Still, the awkward exchange was just one moment in a memorable night. The returning Blockheads also gave this year’s contestants a taste of what lies ahead.
